miche/campag cone locking nut.

i undid the rear wheel on the redline to do some general maintainance and my diligence turned round and bit me in the ass.
turns out I’ve broken the cone locking nut on the drive side into 2 pieces.
so i went into the shop and had a dig round in the spares bin.
no luck, nothing that fits…
seems miche primato hubs use campag threaded axles and cones and we don’t have any parts to fit.
so i went to a well known, inner city shop that specializes in high end bikes and was given some bad news.
turns out that one cone locking nut is going to cost me $35. wholesale.
yes, that’s in Australian dollars, not pesos, or baht, or lire.
DOLLARS!
and people wonder why i refuse to use campag.
so here’s the question.
before i just try this on Saturday and cause myself pain and aggravation, can anyone think of a good reason why i shouldn’t just remove the miche/campag axle that is offending me so, and replace it with a shimano one that i can buy locking nuts for for around 80cents?
anyone?
if i spend long enough on it i might even be able to find a cone/axle set up that will fit the dust seals on the hub.
if i decide against trying this, can anyone think of another idea?
i’m toying with going to a bolt and nut place and trying to get something there as well.
the hubs are brilliant in all other regards, but what shaved, retarded chimp thought that paying $35 for an 80 cent nut was a good idea?
i’ve had shit like this happen with campag before, and it’s the reason i refuse to use it on any road bike i’ve ever owned.
sure it’s good, but it’s not 1000% better than comparable shimano, it doesn’t last 500% longer, and you can’t just wander into any bike shop and grab some spares.
christ, i’m so pissed about this that i’m contemplating just flogging the two sets of wheels i’ve got that run these hubs and using the money to buy a couple of shimano based wheelsets.
anyways, options, opinions, comments?
what we got?

p.s. of course there is always the possibility that the shop i went to just didn’t want to help and quoted a price they knew i wouldn’t want to pay. it’s happened in there before. anyone know the actual cost of one of these damn things. it can’t be that high can it?

Theoretically it could work but you might find the shape of the Shimano cones doesn’t quite fit the cups and bearings.

I had a Record track hub that somebody had mistakenly put Campag road cones in. You couldn’t tell by looking at it but the difference between the road cone and track cone was enough that the hub seemed fine until you rode it for a few hundred metres, at which point the bearings and cones loosened up to the point that you couldn’t ride it.

I would’ve thought the chances of having a Shimano cone fit properly would be pretty slim.

If I was a smartarse, I might tell you to not overtighten them in the first place

If you like, I’ll run the thread gauge on a rear Miche axle at work on Friday, and then at least you’ll know what the thread is, so at a pinch you could try a bolt shop. Alternatively, give Hillbrick (Oz importer of Miche) in Sydney a ring and see where you could get one from, and the real price you might pay 02 9820 4011
