MTB'ing NZ

Thinking of heading to NZ sometime in Spring for a MTB holiday. It will probably be for about 5 days, and we’d take our own bikes. Will consider renting a car if need be.
I’m sure there are people on here with a wealth of advice/ knowledge… so shoot!

North or South Island? North island has some of the best trails in the world around Taupo, I have not ridden them but know plenty who have,
South Island is amazing and they have opened up the gondola in queenstown up to mtb’s now in ski off season.
Spring still can be cold with chances of big snow dumps so make sure it’s late spring if you’re thinking South Island.

Roto north island, Queentown, South Island. You won’t be disappointed.

Yeah Rotorua has a wealth of trails that are riding distance from the town centre - pity it stinks.

But spring can be all over the show in terms of weather so take a good range of gear.

edit: but Rotorua does have hot pools and weird casinos with Jap/chinese tourist = Rotovegas.

queenstown is AWESOME! lots of amazing trails down there and really close to the town. I hit up the gondola for a few days, trails are so well maintained and there is large range of trail types and difficulties, from easy green trails to double blacks and a DJ park with a 60ft gap. There are also plenty of XC trails, and there are a few close wineries that you can visit all in a day by bike.
they have decent bikes to hire there but it was pretty expensive (~$70 for all mountain, ~$130 for DH with lift pass, ~$60 for XC), so bringing a bike will save you a fair bit of cash.
also there is fergburger.

Yeah fergburger and flames rib house and Winnie’s pizza are pretty rad.

Thanks heaps, very helpful. I’ll take all that into account.

Q’town is awesome as is Ferg, just don’t go when your already hungry, you’ll be waiting a while.

Q’town is good but big (trail wise) and usually busy. Depending on what time in spring you’re planning on going give the trail fairies a chance to do some tlc on the trails after the summer hordes then snow, weather can be off and on, if it’s shit in Q duck across to Wanaka as it’s a different climate over the other side of the range and usually dry + enough trails to keep you happy for a few days.

South Is also has heaps in Ch-ch and Nelson. North Is- it’s hard to go past Roto and surrounds but also penty of good riding Welly.
