My hub slips

It doesnt work? Its a quando I think. Do you fix them? Or do you throw them out and replace them?

what do you mean ‘it slips’ ? where exactly? as in it can’t grip the dropout, or something else?

the cog turns but the wheel does not? Is it the thread?

is it a fixed hub? how is the cog attached?

Well, unless it’s a freewheel, not a track cog, sounds like your hub’s threads have gone south.

Can you take pics of it?

Sounds like the cog should be pretty much falling off if it’s behaving like that?

ok, situation is, when pushing the bike(no weight on it), the cog and lock ring rotate, when moving the peddle the cog moves but the lockring does not, so I assume there is no thread on the sucker.

Suggestions for solutions:

Repair - doubt it’s worth it?
Replace 2nd hand - and good hubs for sale
Replace new - is it worth putting a cheap quando or similar back on, or will it just brake again?

take off the rear wheel - does the cog fall off?

stripped threads != repair. replace.

second hand - look around at the bike shops. or contact your local track shop and see what they have in stock.

That’s pretty funny, as in ha ha.

If the lockring is still there the cog won’t fall off even if the threads are stripped.

Quando hubs are notorious for being prone to stripped threads. You’ll have to remove the wheel from the frame, remove the lockring and take out the cog to know for sure what’s going on. It might be the cog that’s busted and not the hub. If that’s the case, just get a new cog and away you go. But I would strongly suggest replacing the hub at some stage. As a wise man once said, “Buy cheap, buy twice!”. Get a good quality hub if you can afford it. The cheapest value for money hub you can get IMO is the velocity/formula. Complete wheelset goes for about $400. The hubset will set you back somewhere below $200. If you want something really good, buy Phil Wood. You’ll be able to pass these on to your grandchildren.

true true. note the time - late

pull it apart. then you’ll know if it’s fucked or not.

yeah pulled the cog off and the thread is gone. WHere is the best place to get a replacement quando hub from? WHat tools would I need to fit the new hub?

Shifterbikes

Seconded. Give Dan a call and he’ll tell you what your best options are.

The worst thing about replacing the hub is the additional cost of spokes and a wheel rebuild.
