New Bottom Bracket

I have just taken receipt of my shiny new Pake frame and forks with some Sugino Crank and Chainring, however I am in need of a Bottom Bracket. Any suggestions? or things to look out for?

What cranks are they- Sugino RD, 75, Messenger?

Yeah that would probably help.

Sugino Single Speed Crank Arm (RD2)

you need a 103mm JIS bb.

Any Brand suggestions?

Sugino make a specific 103mm BB to fit the RD crank- get this.

Yeah, I am aware of the two listed below, however the CBB-103, is out of stock at my local supplier, but they do have the BB3, but the information I can find on it sound like it is designed for a different crankset. Would the BB3, still do the job?

Sugino CBB-103 Bottom Bracket
Standard JIS square taper to fit the Sugino Messenger arms

Sugino BB3 Bottom Bracket
Sugino square taper BB3. Designed by Sugino for its RD48 cranksets.

BB3 upon a quick search is 103mm and JIS tappered.
So that all matches up with your cranks.

Excellent, thanks for that. It just felt like one of those things that could have been more complicated than it sounded.

yeah I’m due for a new BB too, i don’t mind spending more for a good one. Is a sugino 75 worth it or is it all NJS hoo haa?? Any other goodness for outdoor riding? My cranks are Suntour Superbe fluted.

The Sugino 75 BB is unsealed, right? I’d get a Miche Primato, sealed beaings and an adjustable chainline.

Is the miche primato 103mm? Also would you think it would be worth the big dollars on a Phil Wood? Anyone on here have experiencewith either of these?
Thanks

Nope, sorry. Thought they went down that low, but 107mm is the shortest.

anything phil wood i’ve owned has proved its worth numerous times over… i’ve had bb, cog and hubs now. [horatio - we know your opinion]

My BB lasted through several vancouver winters (snow and shitty rain) with zero maintenance and still spun smooth. underwater pump seals for the win!

i’ve had a lot of luck with campy cartridge road bbs as well (centaur/chorus), which while now harder to get seem to be up to the challenge of a melbourne winter. im now using a chorus bb i got on sale from the interwebs as the various campy distros couldnt give me a landing date for any when i was looking urgently at xmas and no shops i tried had even a whisper of one.
