Put a new chain on Tuesday night, seems to be squeaking and creaking a fair bit. I didn’t replace anything else eg. chan ring / sprocket. it’s only really bad when I initially pedal, not when i’m just cruising.
It’s just your regular 1/8" chain, nothing special. Do i need to lube it up more or make adjustments or will the creaking noise eventually go away? the tension is pretty much spot on and the chain line is straight (by eye, although I wear glasses).
If the teeth are a bit worn a new chain might take a bit of ‘bedding in’ with some noise along the way. Otherwise, lube the bastard, check your chainline and ride it.
Not sure of the brand? it was $10 at Super Elliotts bike shop in Adelaide. It’s just a BMX / SS chain. Nothing amazing…
The chain ring and sprocket are old, so i guess they’re just worn. I’ll lube it up tonight. I’m just using regular auto grease… any suggestion for something different?
I half expected it to be noisy, i just don’t want it to break or something mid pedal.
Like nurbs said, don’t use grease - it will just attract filth.
And next time I’d suggest a KMC Kool chain for ~$20 - excellent value and good chains that last well, IME.
I tried a cheap $12 chain once and it was so crap I took it off almost straight away and chucked it - lesson learned.
If the cog/chainring teeth are worn, the chain is going to wear faster. It can be a false economy to put new chains on worn teeth. It’s often better to bite the bullet and replace all of them (assuming that’s necessary), and get a longer service life.
Well I bought another chain that was slightly more expensive (and it was also silver, which is what I wanted), and the problem pretty much went away. I put the $10 chain on a build I did for my friend and it barely made a sound.
Weird.
And there’s nothing wrong with iRivers. Mine plays music, which is all it needs to do.
