NEW 'FIXED GEAR' FAN AND NEED GUIDANCE

hello melbourne… im new to the fixed bikes scene, have been riding mtb for ages since i was young and stopped riding couple of years back due to injuries…i am able to cycle again so am thinkin of getting one new/used bike, preferably fixed for street as im into fixed bikes these days…it will be greatly appreciated if u guys could give some hints…first…is ‘fixed gear’ a brand name for the bike like say goose, hoffman or is it just a term used like BMX ? secondly, where possibly would be better place to check out if were to purchase one ard melb area ? wat brands are recommended for street use? :mrgreen:cheers to all you out there…thnks…

They have a fixed gear drive train. Hence the term fixed/fixie etc.
Its not a brand name.

I’ve no idea about buying a new one. But lots of bikes shops seem to be stocking at least one fixed gear model these days.

Cyclic in Flemington is always a nice place to start. some new fixed and single speed options.

Hi,
Im also a new fixed gear fan, and didnt want to start a new thread for a similar question.
I just want to build a cheap fixie for riding to uni, because after reading on sheldon brown, it seems way too fun to not try once.
I was going to build a “suicide hub”, but am having trouble finding a threaded cassette, and as a result, now i have a dismantled bike and no back wheel.
So im wondering what does everyone else use for a fixed wheel?
Is it just a track wheel, or do you build your on wheels from a previously bought hub?
Which is the cheapest option?

Cheers
sorry for jumping in your thread, but hopefully this answer may help fellow newbies too!

You can get 700c or 27" rear wheels with track hubs on ebay if you want to go down that path. Or you cna get a whole wheelset and make it look nicer. Try the Wheelandsprocket ebay store for semi-okay prices. But you’re still looking at over $200 for a wheelset.

And spokecards… lots of spokecards.
