Outdoor equipment - what should I get?

Rhino was either sponsored by them or seriously in love with them… he seems to have everything they ever made until sort of recently.

Did a little write up here:

Since I plan on spending more time solo in the bush, I’ve been considering either a buying a tracker such as a Spot or a PLB. I couldn’t justify paying a yearly subscription fee to use the Spot, so ended up buying an Ocean Signal RescueMe PLB1 which arrived today.

I am very impressed with how small it is!

So next on my list of purchases is a tent. I still need to save a bit more for this one - but from all reports, getting a two man tent would be a better option for more space. Now I have found this tent, 2kg - has anyone had any experience with this brand?

2kg is pretty heavy for a 2 person tent. Its probably fine though, but not maybe for heavy heavy use. Cheap thou.

Is this for hiking/bike touring or car camping?

If hiking/bike touring you can get something sub 1.5kgs for ~$350 which will be better quality probs too,

If car camping I’d go for something bigger and more sturdy, weight doesn’t really matter.

Okay - so this will be bike only. I already have a marmot limelight 3P for car camping which is awesome.

ok.

Well if your doing 2 panniers and a rack top (front or rear) that vargo is probably fine.

Bikepacking styles, you might have to go smaller.

You can spend another $150-200 and get something 500-700 grams lighter, alot smaller (packed size) and probably better.

but I guess weigh up how often you’ll actually use it?

2-3 times a year? its probably fine, 10+ days a year maybe you wanna think about something better/nicer.

Good point - If I am already spending a few hundred, I would rather spend that bit extra to get something a lot lighter and smaller to pack, but something that will essentially last longer quality wise.

Off the top of my head:

ZPacks if money snow problem.

Tarptent if you’re fine without free standing. Squall 2 packs smallest/lightest. Not the greatest for hanging out in, but OK. One entry. Double Rainbow looks good. Only problem is it being pretty narrow at the top. Stratospire 2 - which I have - is very roomy. Not the lightest. Get the tougher poles.

Big Agnes Fly Creek (or something like that) if you need free standing. Front entry only. MSR Hubba Hubba is also well proven and probably lighter these days than when I bought my old one. These pack up bigger than everything else though (I think).

I was looking at the MSR Hubba HUbba range the other day - the new ones are indeed lighter, but not really made for camping in the middle of nowhere, trying not to be noticed.

I wouldn’t worry about that ATMO. Just camp anyway. The times where colour might actually impact the stealthness of your camp are very few I reckon, and even then it probably wouldn’t matter.

has anyone had any success/failure/experience in nylon sleeping hammocks?

I’ve been wanting one for a while for super portable camping. Sleeping bag and hammock could fit into my saddlebag which would be awesome if they are alright.

+1.

If you wanne be stealthy just get 10m+ off the road amongst some trees, people don’t see it cos they aint really looking and if they do they usually don’t give shit.

I have 2 Big Agnes tents and I am happy with both, only slight annoyance is the entry being front end only (thought I suspect this is how they get them light and cheap), and that the door opening over hangs the floor on the inside so if its really raining some will come in, not really a big deal.

Their 2 person tents are spacious for one, tight but doable with 2.

If you buy the matching footprints you can run them as a fly only, good for summer and settled weather.

i have the MSR Hubba and don’t think the walls below the mesh zips are high enough. I got coated in very fine sand on the beaches in SA and they can also let in a lot of wind when it’s howling and cold. the pic above looks like it’s the same height as mine, but i seem to recall someone saying they’d made them a bit taller.

find out.

If you’re looking at the Hubba Hubba have a look at the Mont Moondance 2 as well. I haven’t compared them for a while but a couple of years ago my GF’s sister ended up choosing the Moondance over the MSR because it was lighter, had double doors, and the inner had higher fabric side walls (see Rolly’s complaint re: wind) but still had the mesh roof for fly-less camping on clear summer nights.

I can’t recall the difference in fabric quality/density though so have a look at that.

Re: tents.

After so so much deliberation I got a tarptent Double Rainbow. I’ll write a proper review eventually but here are a few impressions so far. WCP’s concern of it being narrow at the top hasn’t affected me in the slightest. It’s pretty wide really, I don’t think it would ever be an issue even with two people.
The vestibules (two! Dual entry! Cool!) are pretty spacious, enough for your panniers (not enough for a huge hiking pack without it touching the sides). And if you’re like me there’s plenty of space to throw your shit around everywhere and be generally unorganised.
It’s fkn LIGHT! 1.2 KILOS ARE YOU SERIOUS?! Yes I am. Packs down to the size of maybe 4 burritos? Also with the addition of trecking poles you can make it free-standing, you could probably do it with the right sticks if you get lucky. I think tarptent also sell fold out poles that can be used?
I broke one of the easton stakes though which was a bummer (not surprisingly though they are like 8 grams which is insane) so I’ll needa get some more soon :frowning:

How many jaffles is that?

Are we talking size, weight, speed at which I sling em to the masses? What?!

Did the ends pop off? Leatherman pliers get them out for me. My plan is to rivet them on properly. Pretty shitty design really, gluing them on, but they nail through pretty rough ground to hold securely. Glad to hear the tent’s working out so well.

RE: Mont Moondance; yeah, they’re a good equivalent (from memory, not googling it). I think they have smaller dimensions though eh? Maybe. I’ve heard the complaint about the mesh being too low on the Hubba Hubba before too, but haven’t found it a problem in the wind at all. I’ve never camped on the beach though.

Nope, bent in half when I was pushing it into not great ground…
