as there is a swap meet coming up soon, i was thinking of getting some parts that will go nicely on my se lager 08. want to know what restrictions i have to buying the following things. like if there are size restraints or something like that
im planning to buy a stem, that will be horizontal to the floor some for some drop bars. but my fork 1 1/8" threadless what does that mean. which will go onto some RC drop bars i got off ebay. and also thinking of getting some rise bars that will flit the same stem? if possible
a new silver head set
also want some cyclocross brakes that will go on the top horizontal part of the bars, like do i need specific dimensions or something?
For the stem your going to want a standard 1 1/8" clamp on stem. You can’t go and change it over to quil style one cause it just won’t happen. What’s you budget? Most 1 1/8 stems will have a detachable face plate so you won’t have any trouble changing between bars. You just need to find out what diameter the clamp area is on the bars you have bought as this will determine whether you need a 25.4mm or 26mm clam on the stem. Chances are when you buy risers they will be a 25.4 clamp so you’ll have to run a shim with them if the drops you got are 26.0.
Headset is a standard 1 1/8’ headset not the integrated or internal type.
As for leavers cyclo cross style levers will probably be for road bars so you’ll have to shim them when you put em on the risers.
Because I’m slow at typing Bender answered eveything!
1 1/8" is the diameter of your forks steerer tube. You’ll need a stem that will fit that, and there is quite a few out there. This is the more “modern” technology (to an extent). A 1" quill stem will not work. These are made for 1" threaded forks and headsets. Same goes with your headset, you’ll need a 1 1/8" headset.
Bars have a bunch of different clamp sizes (the bar that the stem “clamps” onto). Depending on what diameter clamp size the bars you bought off ebay are, you may have trouble getting risers with the same clamp size…
Same with brake levers (different clamp sizes), but I’ve never used cyclocross ones, so I’ll leave that for someone else to answer.
thanks for that, it really did help. also, is 25.4 and 26 just the diameter of the bars right?
and to have my stem parallel, what angle does the stem need to be so its parallel?
could i also ask what is shim?
sorry for such beginner questions, its just that im going to buying everything this weekend at the swap meet and i dont want to be buying stuff that isnt compatible to my bike. but im excitd to build it up
Yes to have it parallel it’s the angle of the stem- road one not an MTB one-easy to tell just put it on the floor one way will go up the otehr will either go down a lot or not.
25.4, 26 is the diameter of the bars- if you’re careful you can use 26 or even 26.4 bar, in a 25.4 stem but not the othe way around.
A shim is a bit of metal that makes up the difference between the smaller diameter bars and the larger diameter stem- coke tin works.
I love swap meets, when’s the next one in brisbane!!!
To get it perfectly flat you need to find out the angle of your headtube subtract this umber from 90 and you have the angle of the stem you need. Track bikes are generally around 75o so a 15o stem should sort you out.
