polishing aluminium rims

Hello,

I got my hands on a set of NOS Araya double eyeletted 36h rims.

I want to polish them to a mirror type shine for my new fixie project before I lace them.

How is the best way to achieve this with common things you would have around the house! I have some Mothers metal polish, but I dont think this is going to do the job.

Suggestions?

Autosol
+
Elbow Grease

Shine

Autosol won’t do shit unless you strip the anodise off them. It’ll make em a bit shinier but you’ll never get it to mirror.

If your serious google it, strip the ano off, get a drill or bench grinder, polishing mops cutting compound and a few beers and sit down for a while.

It’ll be cheaper and easier to get someone to do it for you.

If you want to do it in the cheap get some oven cleaner and strip the anodising off. Then then with 1000 grade wet and dry rub them down until all the anodising has been removed. Then be prepared to spend hours with a soft cloth and that metal polish.

Otherwise just get some one with a polishing wheel to do it, or get your own. I bought a $50 polishing kit for my bench grinder and have been getting good results.

Wow, thats the result I’m looking for!

I’m going for gloss black frame, polished alloy forks, wheels, and cranks.

how long did that take?

Most of the time is pent in preparation, removing anodising, sanding to remove scratches, and then finally i buffed them twice. Your rims wouldn’t take that long to do, 2-3 hours for the pair start to finish.
