Potential of Hydrogen - destined to become the next industrie bikes?

Since the last thread got waaaay off topic. http://www.fixed.org.au/forums/t14549/

This has just popped up opposite my place of business, in the Glue store at Highpoint (aka Knifepoint, the wonder of the west)…
Conveniently situated in the appropriate location amongst the womens shoes no less

this makes me sad, so very very sad

i fucking love highpoint. movies + vegan milkshakes from shakeaway. if it had a lord of the fries i’d be there 24/7

fkn come and visit me sometime then?

ahhh that hurts.

I’ll have to check it out next time we’re up there.

I usually hang out there thursday night with all the underage kids and hideous haircuts…

I think I’ve seen your bike in the window of the store you work in… not that I’m a stalker.

Back to topic though, I think from from the original first post in the other thread you could see it coming. Designer looks, models hanging out with bikes, not people getting ready to ride. I"m thinking about getting all dressed up in lycra and hi-vis every time I go for a ride, just to make sure everyone knows I’m riding, not looking for pseudo street cred.

yeah it lives out the back now that I’ve made a rack for it, tiny store with no place to put my shit. say hi next time you’re around? i’m the lazy guy with long hair, ignoring customers and trolling the fixed.org forums

well I’ll be buttered on both sides - for some reason I though you were a girl…

I saw this Potential for hydrogen plastered all over a bus at lunch.

Tripple triangle & curvery seat post VISP ?..why not! if prices are similar to VISP id buy one. I mean its only a matter of time, everything gets copied.

Im prediciting a whole bunch of PH ‘Post your Ride’ threads going up soon.

You know you’ve made it when you find yourself on the side of a bus…unless you’re a cyclist.

no you wouldn’t - your coach wont let you wantonly indulge in any of the 3 items mentioned. :stuck_out_tongue:

The ‘models’ on the PoH website are actually all guys from the Sydney Sunday ride, I go to uni with one of them.

They’re all riders, if someone asked you to dress pretty for a free bike frame then you’d probably do it too.

I dress pretty for most things other than work, hell I’d dress up for a free vegan shake just to find out what the hell is in one.

I tool a photo of one of these locked up in Sydney when I was there last week. The TT with curvy seat tube in the shiny copper finish with chrome stays and forkends. Would post a pic if I wasn’t on my phone. I admit it did look freakin awesome and I would happily ride one. But then again I ride a roadmaster conversion and a visp lol. Apparently they are heavy as. That’s the downside. 600 bucks complete is pretty good but.

^ Yes fair enough, but my point is that if they were a company that actually took bicycles seriously and wasn’t just some other fuckwit trying to capitalise on this “craze” they would be selling these bikes in, ummm, bike shops maybe?

clothing stores don’t fucking sell bikes, they sell clothing.

That’s also a fair point!!!

This was all covered in the other thread.

Potential of Hydrogen is owned by the same parent company as Industrie, Glue, and a bunch of other fashion stores. Hence they’re now selling cheap colourful bikes next to cheap colourful clothes. I don’t think that’s such a shocking idea.

You might see yourself as some kind of Genuine Cycling Hero because you ride an expensive track frame, but don’t forget there’s a lot of non-cyclists out there that just want something with two wheels, that preferably matches their shoes/handbag.

These people don’t care if the parts are NJS, and they won’t know how to tension the chain or adjust the saddle, but at the end of the day I’d rather have these people next to me at the lights on a cheap bicycle than driving an oversized four-wheel-drive.

I should add that, personally, I really hate the lowest-common-denominator approach that these bandwagon-jumping fashion companies take. In general I’ll pay extra for something well made, rather than something designed to be binned next month.

But in this case, we’re talking about steel-framed bicycles. There are far less ethical things being sold every minute. Have a rant about petrol-driven leaf-blowers, FFS.

If you feel threatened by the youngsters in the shopping centre copying your “fixed gear look”, then you’ve got it wrong to begin with.

I ride a piece of shit that i put together myself, but thanks for your generalised assumption. And as for these people who want something with two wheels that preferably match their shoes/handbag? If they really wanted a bike like this, they would go to a legitimate bicycle retailer and purchase one. But no, instead they want one of these bikes because they’re being shoved down their throats as the “next craze” by a shitty mainstream fashion company

Which part of my post was covered in the other thread?

haha, which “fixed gear look” are you talking about? the one where I wear cycling shorts/jeans and a t-shirt/cycling jersey? yeah man, i put soooo much time into my look.
but not anywhere did i mention a word about these youngsters copying my so called “look”, my point was about the company choosing some poorly thought out marketing methods which will probably lead to “Potential of Hydrogen” becoming a laughing stock just like the Industrie bikes.
I had a moderatley decent opinion of this brand before i saw their marketing approach, now i’m leaning more toward wishing them a plague of financial management problems and terrible sales figures.
thats because i’m a dick though

thanks for trying to play the devils advocate and at the same time adding the disclaimer that you hate these lowest common denominator approaches adopted by these companies too. there’s nothing quite like sitting on the fence and throwing stones huh?

( I kid)

ps, good idea regarding the rant about petrol driven leaf blowers, that can be next

blah dont know why youre so passionate about it, its business. bikes are being sold. big deal. not everyones so serious about bikes. who cares

Hey ellepea, I wasn’t having a go at you personally.

That was an open-ended rant - when I said “you” I meant anyone that actually thinks they are a Genuine Cycling Hero. For example.

On the other hand (since I’m so good at sitting on fences) given that you work in a fashion store, and ride a VISP, I would have thought you’d be well aware of the commercial economics that lead to cheap bikes being sold in clothes stores.
