Riding to Seymour next weekend (flying home from Stockholm tonight!)
Never been out that far on my bike and have no idea what the roads are like. Any suggestions on a nice route? I’ll probably be on a SS touring bike but undecided for now. Happy to go out of my way a bit to make the ride that bit nicer (less congested/better scenerey).
P-dub and I headed up north on Old Sydney Rd which is unsealed and up and down for a few k’s, then continued north on the highway to Tooborac where we stopped for a beer, then headed east skirting the south side of Puckapunyal to Seymour. Easy to navigate, no serious climbs, pretty light on traffic and wide shoulders.
I would recomend riding out to Kinglake, dropping off the back into Yea and then onto Seymour- all the roads have a pretty good shoulder. Its the hiller option but some beautiful roads.
Yeah, Old Sydney Road was a really nice ride, good views, a few dirt sections but nothing my 23c tyres couldn’t cope with. Would ride it again if I wasn’t so lazy.
Thanks for the help guys, I will probably go down old sydney rd to kilmore and then down broadford-kilmore road, will try to throw in some more dirt roads. Actually heading to the Commonground music festival just below seymour.
I did this on friday. Left at 11:20 from Cragieburn and arrived at my destination (farm/commune below seymour) at 2:50ish. Got the train to cragieburn station (good decision) then rode up mickleham/old sydney rd (thanks for the tip!), had a gadorade in kilmore, then rode to broadford asked for directions and ducked down the highway to sharps and taylors road (sugar loaf hill road would be a good alternative) just before tallarook. I did it on my SS pomp running 38/16 (and 19 on the otherside) and made it up all the hills but would have enjoyed it more with gears, beautiful scenery. Was running 35mm Kojaks and they were the ideal tyre in my eyes. My ride was about 50/50 dirt to tarmac.
