There are various flavours- Campagnolo, SRAM and Shimano. I happen to prefer the Shimano.
As someone who owns both Ultegra/DA and 105 I stand by my comments.
I can get brand new Ultegra for $840 delivered.
Haven’t done a huge shop around, but that seems pretty decent.
Thats a bargin.
Pfft I ran hurret/shimano 105/shimano 600/nervar all at once. HURRET!
That IS a good deal… I would recommend anyone kick in a couple of extra bills if it means upgrading to Ultegra.
this was only a problem on the mid model 5600 shifters. they eventually fixed the problem.
if you want shifter failure, buy sram.
^^what he said
the reason this hurley person is rocking, or is wise to be rocking a da front mech with sram is because sram can’t make a front derailleur that works. sram red front mechs don’t work ahlf as well as tiagra. not one pro riding the tour is using the standard red mech, they use the sttel cage versions, ie force, and even that doesn’t work too well.
YES. i have 2010 record, 2011 record, 7900 da, 6600 ultegra sl, 7800 da and 5600 105 (and clearly too many bikes) and have ridden every sram and every road groupset on the market , while the 2011 record and 7900 are the best groupsets and it is noticeable, i would pick nice wheels over a groupset upgrade any day of the week.
rival doesn’t come close to the quality of ultegra.
maybe i dislike sram a bit much. and quoted lot’s of people, but i guess what i am trying to say, is save your coin on groupset and buy some wheels.
Thanks for all the discussion and comments everyone.
I’m mainly interested in a good groupset for the reliability and lasting performance, over getting new wheels which will ‘improve’ my performance.
I don’t race so I’m not needing to shave seconds, or to make the bike ‘easier’ to ride.
I ride because I love it, and it keeps up my fitness.
I just want a group that I can rely upon to get me through all different conditions, and up all kinds of mountains and terrain without worrying whether the derailleur is going to kick it in for no apparent reason out in the middle of nowhere.
I know no bike part is perfect, but some are (alot) better than others.
Thanks again.
if you are just worried about the derailleur, then why don’t you just replace that? a lot cheaper than a whole groupset and will go on without any troubles
Yeah, I used that just as an example…
anyway I think this thread is exhausted.
Yawn, so am I. Come to bed Daniel? ![]()
i don’t see upgrading to something that is exactly the same but with less material as being beneficial in terms of longevity. 105 will work for just as long as ultegra.
Wait a couple of months and upgrade to Ultegra electronic.
We got the guff off Shimano a couple of weeks back and it is going to be a seriously viable option for lots of people.
They will be doing upgrade kits at about $1600 ish. With variation for the AUD. Shifters, mechs, cables (wiring harness) and accessories.
Keep your brakes, crank, chain and cassette.

I have a few questions about this groupset thing and I don’t really want to start a new thread, so…
I’ve been using Rival/Force with 105 cassette for about 500km now. While it was smooth at the beginning, now my 2009 Force FD can’t shift properly; in fact it shifts horribly. I have read somewhere that SRAM have upgraded/fixed the FD issue with 2010/2011 model. So would it solve the problem if I buy 2011 Force FD? Also is it possible if I have Shimano’s FD on it, say Ultegra FD?
