SPF arm socks

Wondering if anyone is using and can recommend a light weight, high SPF arm sock for road riding.
I’m part Jinjar and burn badly. Sunscreen helps obviously but after 2-3 hours on the bike if you don’t reapply it’s game over.
The wife pointed out I’m unlikely to find a Euro product as they will take as much sun as they can get.
Ground Effect have a new product but the colours are a bit meh so last resort.

Pretty sure Rolly is Robably uses them.

I have the pearl izumi ones. They stop the sun, but i find they are better as lightweight arm warmers for the inbetween temperatures, but I overheat really quickly - summer kit for 80% of the year

These are Australian, might be worth trying… IceRays UV Protective Clothing

A few of the bike gear companies like Louis Garneau and GORE etc already make SPF arm sleeves. I’m sure there are others too.

yeah I have pearl Izumi ones & they’re good. I get pretty hot wearin them, but I get hot riding in summer anyway & the alternative isn’t worth not having them on.

trigger tagged me in a pic on Instagram, seems northside wheelers have some, but they’re $65, so I won’t be buying any. think my PI ones were $30ish…

actually, I think mine are sugoi.

I see craft make them too, so you might get them on wiggle?

Bogan up, and matchy match your frame colour each ride.

Seriously though wouldn’t the extra heat and subsequent stress to you be worse than carrying a small pump spray of sunscreen and putting it on routinely mid ride?

nope.

the issue (for me at least) is that reapplying sunscreen to sweaty arms is useless.

Assos arm coolers.

It looks like they are now called ‘arm protectors’. Anyway, I have them in black and white and they both work. I am not ginger but burn easily.

Thanks for all the input. I’ll follow up on a couple of options.
As Rolly said, re-applying to sweaty arms is a problem.
Plus you end up with sunscreen on everything. I’m not normally beardo enough to carry an extra bottle of water and a collapsable bowl to wash up in.

I use some Nike Compression LS tops that acts as a base layer and helps protect against the sun as well. Its not thick and wicks sweat away quite effectively being its DriFit.

pretty sure its not SPF, but has worked well for me to protect against the sun on my arms

A reminder from the Sock thread…

hey ive stopped wearing compression socks! cmon! gimme some credit!

but i find nikes dri-fit gear works well as a baselayer for its sweat-wicking properties!

Bought me some of these.*
web store thingee didn’t seem super professional and got a rather vague automated email saying thanks for the inquiry after ordering, got a slightly more informative email the next day confirming the order. ordered on the 3rd delivered today though so all good.
will test ride and report back.

  • i am not a ranga, just don’t really like having pasty white hands from gloves and deeply tanned forearms

that too

i sunscreen up before actual planned rides, just for the commute it’s a bit of an annoyance, i forget, sunscreen at work runs out, etc so these should be a better solution, will report back :stuck_out_tongue:

I’ve worn the ice rays a few times over the weekend.
They didn’t seem to be any hotter than no sleeves (actually feel cooler when you first put them on). The ridiculously BRIGHT white colour seems to reflect ALL sunlight which probably helps keep things cool (they do come in other colours as well)
packaging says they are tested to be SPF50+, I didn’t burn wearing them but it was later on in the afternoon so i might not have burned/tanned much without them anyway.

I’m an albino, tanning is nowhere near being on the agenda, so I always go out mummified. It’s only this year that I’ve migrated to shorts instead of 3/4 length knicks that go over the knee! (This whole ‘long sock’ trend is working in my favor for once.)

I’ve been on the L/S baselayer tip like Jase for a couple of years now rather than using separate arm screens, which never seem to fit properly. Would recommend the Skins C400 model, which was cut really well for cycling, but I think they’ve discontinued it - they do appear to have a L/S top made from that fancy Coldblock-treated fabric which could work really well for a day in the sun.

i wear the assos ones for about a week every summer when the uv goes off the chart

long sleeve base layers obviously work but removable stuff is always better on the bike
