Spray Paint

Does anyone know where you can get paint similar to the ones they use on alot of the kieran bikes with glitter in it? is it available in pressure pack and if so were from??

I don’t think you will be finding it in a pressure pack. The glitter is usually supplied seperately to the paint in packets.

The process isn’t easy and requires a spray gun/compressor setup. The base colour you want is first layed down and allowed to dry, then the glitter or metal flake you want is added to clear coat, once enough glitter has been layed down it is buried with more clear top coat.

No, the laws of physics state that metal flakes cannot fit through a tiny valve and an even tinier nozzle.

You can buy the metallic flakes from a few places, House of Kolour makes some I know, and Ive seen some on ebay.

I don’t think this would be an easy home DIY project at all, most of those frames are chromed underneathe the paint for a start, and the clearcoat they apply to hold the flakes down would be the kind of thing you couldn’t do yourself without the right equipment.

Closest you will find…go to a local automotive paint shop (a proper one, not repco or some crappy store) and you will be able to get pearls and fluros and a few options that you can’t get anywhere else. Thats about as good as you will get from just aerosol cans, anything else would require a lot more work.

You could buy it about 1-2 years ago. I range the company up who made it and its now discontinued. Next bike i build is going to be Gloss Black with mutlicoloured flecks

^^^Whats the name of the company/paint? It would not be possible to put the flakes Im talking about into any aerosol can, perhaps it was some kind of glittery paint…sounds interesting although I would be very dubious on the results you could get from it.

Honestly can’t remember. They were available aus-wide. They make normal spray paint aswell.

they’re in victoria and offer courses. was gunna get a frame done through them but they’re really expensive. awesome guys however.
they did say to bring the frame in and make it a project if you do a course with them and it works out to be cheaper.

I swear to god I have seen metal flick paint at bunnings it must be as rare as 700c forks aye ross

Kenny, you fuckin worship Ross. Time to come outta the closet mate.

i was at bunnings today getting spray paint for my bike and didn’t see any glitter spray paint.

i was chatting to a dude yesterday who had bought metal flake from an art supply store.
it was designed for use with a spray gun, though he was using it for a different purpose.

Have a look at this
www.alsacorp.com and go to the ‘killer cans’ section.
This is available in cans and small kits online or locally from a company called PTW (products that work). Not cheap by any stretch of the imagination. I have used the chrome version with a red candy. Have tried the crazing system but that needs some serious practice.

^^^That’s what I meant by the kind of thing you can get at a specialty auto paint shop. Not exactly metal flake, but definately the best ‘effects’ you can get out of a can. The finish isn’t as good as they will lead you to believe, but for something a bit different to your average paint they do the job I guess. Also for any of the ‘effects’ like chameleon and fluro and whatnot, you would need to get your undercoat SPOT ON, its very volatile like that and could look very patchy without a proper undercoat.

Its all good ladys and gents i painted the frame on the weekend and got some metal flake sprrinled it on. Clear coated it and baked it and now it looks great. Now just waiting on my 3rensho decals in z post

That chrome stuff would look awesome on a helmet

Hmm, I wish I’d known about that a month or two ago!

I took the lazy, learn-nothing approach  getting my frame done by kickass kustom, a car painter. I’d still like to unleash my own brand of crazy on a bike at some stage, though.

Has anyone ever seen a clear finish with glitter in it in a spray can?

I’m almost 100% sure I’ve seen it in a hardware or art supply store around town (Melb). I almost bought some once myself. Damned if I can remember where though.

You might need 2 or 3 of them though.

Tamiya (the hobby company) makes a number of spray packs (though they are small, and quite expensive) in glitter/flake colours.

You’d need a good 3-5 of them to do a frame but they come up quite nice.
