Hi guys, I have a question regarding something I just picked up. Forgive me if this is in the wrong place, its been a while since my last post.
I recently went on a bit of a gumtree impulse buy (the best type of impulse shopping) and ended up picking up a Sunn Prim Ti Hardtail with a pretty decent part spec. Rockshoxx Sid WC carbon 100mm fork, American Classic 26’ Wheelset, SRAM X0 group, carbon bars, seat post and Formula R1 brakes.
I paid $1750.00 for the whole thing and its in perfect condition. The frame might be too small for me though so I’m tossing up selling it and wacking the parts on something else.
From the rapid googling I did on “Sunn Bikes,” prior to rolling up at their door with cash in hand I found they were a french MTB company that used to make some quality bikes but have recently gone into liquidation. Apart from that I know shit all and the ever reliable interwebs isn’t proving to be that useful. My thought process was something along the lines of: great condition, good components, “hey its Ti how can I go wrong here, surely its worth something.”
Im hoping for a bit of an evaluation on the frame… As I said, perfect condition. I dont think I’ve shot myself in the foot here but if I have then it could have been much worse.
Cheers for any help, would be massively appreciated!
Sunn is one of, if not the coolest mtb brands of all time (i reckon, anyway, and i’m sure everyone thinks just like me). I have no idea where those ti frames are made, but i saw that bike floating around on gumtree a while and thought it would be great value. Keen to see some detailed pics! Stories out of the Sunn world cup team in the 90s are nuts, team mechanics being framebuilders and welding up new or adjusted swingarms and pivot points in the pits. Rad.
Oh, and commencal grew out of sunn, and now is morphing into something else again. I’d bloody love a sunn.
I’m with JP here, Sunn bikes are fucking awesome and I grew up looking at them with envy. Didnt Anne Carolin Chauson once rode for Sunn? Not quite sure about that but I do picture her on one. Or was it Missy Giove (not sure if I spelled her right but some might remember her). Anyway, you did an awesome job there and plllleeeeeeeeeeease post pics of this thing asap.
Ok cool! Yeah this one had been on gumtree for a while and as they were selling it for a friend they needed it out ASAP.
Seems like I havent made a huge blunder then. After doing a bit more research last night I did come across a few reviews and pages that seemed to hold the bike in pretty high regard so on the whole pleased, but I still think it’ll be too small for me unfortunately. Unless I crank the seat post to the extreme!
Fingers crossed I can get a half reasonable price for the frame to get something else to use the parts with though, which doesnt bother me that much.
Pics as requested below, I really like the badge art on the front and the diamond pattern on the tubes.
Yeh a bit disappointing but not too phased. My original idea for my first foray into MTB though was to build something up, possibly an on-one inbred or vodoo Bokor, to have a lot of fun on. Im sure I’ll be able to use most of these parts on that so still pretty happy.
Anyone like to have a stab at what a frame like this might be worth? I wouldnt really know where to start to be honest $500.00 / $600.00 ??
that thing is awesome!! nice etching. And yeah, how mint!? While interest in 26" XC gear is on the decline, its a good size for those wheels so I reckon moving it on wont be too much of an issue. Heaps of close up pics to reassure people that is ace, and maybe a link to some history on the brand, you’d be unlucky to get less than $500 for it I reckon, so long as you’re willing to wait if necessary. Shame its not your size.
Are the dropouts just vertical or some interchange action back there?
Agreed. too much seatpost is when the limit mark is seeing daylight, and that just means you need a longer seatpost. If its a good length, its the right size. Stuffing around with saddle setback and stem length compromises ride much more than seat up and down. Risor and you are done! (long seatposts flex more which is another bonus)
Thanks for all the help guys! Bit of an update, I took it out today for a bit of a spin with a bit more post and some risers I had floating around and am absolutely on the fence. I think if I can get a good price for the frame then I will sell it and go for the rambler and hopefully have a bit of cash left over!
As Im relatively new to MTB does anyone see any reason why the parts shouldnt fit on something like a rambler? Am I right in thinking I will need a new headset?
