Occasionally I have to write grandiloquent descriptions of architecture projects, where I spend a lot of time trying to find different ways to say ‘aesthetic’ - I find Thesaurus.com helps with this.
i read it as unjugate…the opposite of conjugate.
now i know what it means. for use by botanists or wanky architects.
in between overly magniloquent descriptions of things chaz, you make some excellent points. simplicity (as in many things) is the key here.
if people get confused they will more easily get angry or do the whats not expected. this will lead to accidents and then cyclists (who are the easiest targets) will likely cop the blame (or the coathangers/shoves of pedestrians).
That’s what the motorists used to think about Swanston as well.
Yeah but cars have other viable options. Cyclists don’t.
Diverted around Elizabeth Street possibly(with a total fuckaround getting back to StKilda Rd), but I can’t imagine your average commuter doing the uphill, Russell St. climb from Flinders.
True that
What can be taken from this discussion is that:
Cyclists will winge regardless of the best intentions
Motorists will always use the registration draw-card
Why can’t anyone see the bigger picture?
Then they’re too soft. I prefer Exhibition because it’s a bit steeper.
^^This.
Traffic speeds are down to 24km/h on Sydney’s main roads, and the comments pages on the tabloids somehow get around to blaming cyclists rather than the thousands of cars clogging up the roads.
People struggle to see past their own self-interested point of view.
Rode it yesterday. It was pretty shit. Two pedestrians jumped out in front of me, but i was expecting it.
That said, i think it has the potential to smooth out. Like someone said before, it’s about a change in culture.
And when everyone gets used to it, because it’s right near RMIT and mostly used by students, they will have graduated and the next set of students will come along and clog up the path.
I think I hate it just because bobby doyle thinks it’s great
as good a reason as any.
Apparently all we need is fatter tyres…Tram tracks a danger to cyclists: coroner - Yahoo!7
haha, I felt the wrath of the tram track on my beach cruiser about ten years ago. Those tyres are massive!
fuck them
I think this is the bottom line. You can’t expect to just cruise through at any speed uninterrupted.
The fact is that there will be peds, they’ll get in the way, and cyclists will just have to slow down and look out. And quite often, they’ll have to stop and give way to peds.
I don’t really have a problem with it. Mostly because I wouldn’t be riding there on weekdays but also because even with these ‘problems’, riding is still a better option.
Remember this is only the first one. There will be another four or so between Franklin and Flinders St. So we will end up with a half mall in the end. There will be minimal cars but Swanston St isn’t a cycling highway its a shared ped/cycle/delivery etc - all this mixing is relatively new to Australian cities - it’ll take a few attempts to get it right.
As a move to improve Urban amenity its actually better to slow the cyclists down - Swanston St is really a pedestrian thoroughfare first and foremost in its current and future configuration. To make it a real cycle friendly street they should call a spade a spade and reintroduce traffic with proper cycling infrastructure.
Anyway we shouldn’t be complaining, we have it pretty sweet ridding through inner Melbourne compared to the suburbs, other cities in Australia… whinging about a several million dollar infrastructure project that really does benefit cycling won’t make the cycle lobby look to good.
Didnt Doyle say there would be no curb? I rode up there the other day, saw a sign saying “cyclists dismount” and noticed there was in fact a very large curb.
I walked past today, and there are some crazy types directing foot and bicycle traffic. I found it quite amusing.
What cyclists want Swanston St to be:
I’d settle for something like this.
i rode through again today at 6:30 and noticed that there’s some more markings indicating the correct bike path, and some bright yellow lines i didn’t notice last time. are they new?
it’s not so bad now everyone is a little more used to it.
some bystander dragged some asian students off the path just before i approached them, and indicated not to walk there
