Nice. Looks a bit easier to get in and out of the Hof!. Still hard to go past the Bullit. I think i will sell the Omnium (by a Soma Wolverine with the cash) and hold off for a Bullit at some point. Let me know if you know anyone wants an Omnium Minimax
Is there any opinion on the Douze cargo bikes, I’ve seen a few on gumtree, and they seem pretty smart? They’re up the high end of the price range secondhand, around $5k…
I’m moving to geelong, and something with a tray to take the dog down to the river and the beach would be superb, in a perfect world i’d be able to spring for one of these, but will likely start with one of the cheapy chinese ones to see if it’s a good idea

That’s pretty cool.
20 char.
I’m also interested in this thread. We’re having a third kid in a couple of months, so looking for an option that can carry 3 - maybe two in a front box and the bigger kid on some kind of rear rack seat.
Electric would also be good - second car alternative basically.
I think Gazelle make a simple 2 person setup that you could also put a rear child seat on. I reckon electric would be a big advantage for such a load. You can fit 3 kids on the back of some Yubas and Big Dummies easily too, and they’re a bit easier to ride. That’s what I’d do (and have done, and have had a Bullitt). If one kid needed to be in a seat though, you might struggle to get another two to fit.
EDIT: Link
Also, I’ve ridden a Douze and they’re very good. I think it’s worth spending decent money on these things. Also, I had dreams of taking my dog on the Bullitt but he wouldn’t stay on. We worked really hard on it but it was never going to work. I’ve seen people do it though and been very jealous. Still love Goose though
Yeah, It would be a huge pain if the dog didn’t like it!
The Douze ones are good. When we were looking, it was narrowed down to a Douze or a Bakfiet (we went with Bakfiet for price budget reasons).
If you’re going to get a cargo bike i highly, highly recommend going electric.
They are heavy, some are difficult to get out of the saddle and not much fun without e-assist.
We use ours as a second car, do shopping with it, take the kid to kinder, Sometimes Anna will jump in if we are going for the night.
My point is, they are a lot more useful with e-assist. Worth the extra money.
Having ridden ones at work, both our work ones (electric and not) and customers cargo bikes I can agree with getting an E-cargo bike.
Go ride some at cargo cycles in East Brunswick, they have a good range and a good people.

I have had a Douze 800 with the messenger frame for about 6 months. I had originally wanted a Bullitt, but came to the realisation that carrying 2 kids would be much easier in the Douze (in stock configuration). The box is huge and allows enough room for kids, bags, shopping and beer. We commute on it 3 days per week and do most of our local travel on it on the weekends. Its super comfortable to ride and once you get up to speed I find it rolls quite fast given its size (non electric 1 x 9 ext gearing) and we get a lot of dropped jaws from other hubbards. The cable steering as mentioned above is another big plus as can you turn the front wheel almost perpendicular.
I think if you have one child to carry, a Bullit would probably be perfect but if you want a bit more space, cable steering and the option to seperate the bike in two parts - the Douze is for you. A good visual comparison of sizes can be seen here: Cargo space: The overview – Cargobike Magazine
Figure I’m at a point where I can weigh in on this too. For cruising around the city with ease, the Steps + Bullitt combo is nice and you learn to relax a little bit and let the e-assist do the work. However, if I was to buy a cargo bike to ride solely for longer trips, I’d skip the e-assist. When taking off, or accelerating, the motor sucks up most of the power - even with the assist off. It feels like the cranks are made of rubber - more of a hindrance than a help.
Resurrecting this thread.
Post your kid haulers. I will when I get around to it.
Yuba Spicy Curry, with the bread basket on the front, and the monkey bars and padded seats on the back. Had it for about 5 years, nearly 6k KMs on it. Fucken great.
These can also be set up for baby seats and whatnot.

OK here’s my Yuba SC
This pic is from July 2020 so the kids are a fair bit bigger and the bike is a bit more beaten up. It’s at just over 4500kms now and it’s been great. Both kids are just on cushions now.
This bike was recently stolen:
Which has been heart breaking. It was a fair bit more fun to ride than the SC and felt more powerful up the hills. I’m sure that’s not just to do with the difference in weight. I think the later generation motors deliver torque better, and I was always interested in testing a new SC to compare to my old one. I haven’t had the opportunity for it though.
I’ll replace that Clydesdale bike (It’s a modified Giant Fastroad E+2) with a Benno Boost. A friend has one and they look great. It’ll help being able to carry both kids on both bikes we ride, and I’m thinking the Benno will ride a bit better than the SC. Not that the SC is bad at all, it’s just not as refined as the other bikes. I still love it though
And just because, here’s my old Surly Big Dummy, which I loved dearly and feel sad about selling. I sold it because I felt that fitting a clunky electric conversion to it would’ve been desecrating it. I wanted an ebike because we were moving to a really hilly area.
Sometimes though, I still think maybe I should’ve just converted it.
Those Bennos look pretty good.
Yeah I’m pretty excited about it
