Thread dig and semi-related to my post in the kids thread… Geoff/Pete/Cam - how’re you liking your Bullitts? Looking at getting one or a Douze/Trio Bike
https://www.douze-cycles.com/douze-cycles-up10/
Also, since we’re in pancake-flat Berlin but the possibility of living Sydney again, have any of you got renewed thoughts on gearings? Would deffo go for belt/IGH since the roads get salted in winter and it’s going to be stored outside with the other Bakfiets/city bikes.
Is there something that makes the Bullitts so special or have they just had a very successful marketing campaign?
Enjoying ours, Eliana especially loves being ridden everywhere in it.
Running it 1x11, 32 to 11-46 Shimano XT M8000, works fine for everything I encounter here in Melbourne with one or two of the girls in the box.
Can’t run it belt drive as it’s the older model and doesn’t have a break in the frame for the belt.
I think the Bullitt does well because it’s been around for ages, it’s reasonably easy to ride, stable. If I was in Brisbane still, and I was buying, I’d be looking at an electric one.
Bullitt or Urban Arrow would be my choices.
Playing with fire…
I’ve sold my Bullitt and now ride a Big Dummy. I much prefer it for my use. The Bullitt was great fun to ride, and it was fun to strap the car capsule to it and ride around with Vic the 2-3 times I did it, but once that things was in there I couldn’t carry much. You can fit a fair bit in a bucket on one, along with kids, but as soon as Vic could go in the Bobike Mini (Yepp mini equivalent), my approach changed heaps.
The BD allows me to carry two kids in two ways: Yepp Mini + Maxi rear, just a cushion and Maxi on the rear. That means I can carry a kid from like 8-9 months old, whenever they’re good to go in the Yepp Mini, same as on any bike. That window of time from birth to then is the only window that the Bullitt filled, and we only did it a few times. With the BD, I can carry a full camping/shopping load and kid/s no worries, and it handles better on dirt tracks, and it’s easier to put it on top of the car. I much prefer it.
Of course you don’t need a cargo bike to just carry a kid and a bit of stuff around, but it helps for full shopping loads and camping. I can see a day when we would fit an electric conversion kit to it, depending on where we move to. I’ll have to consider how that would effect camping trips though
Anyone have any thoughts on the Omnium for dog portage, and the potential for child portage in the future?
Been toying with the idea of one for a while.
the best cargo bike is a hilux true story.
This was available last week.
I have an omnium and have been using is for dog carting duties in Berlin. Jody Auf Rädern on Instagram: "First proper test ride. Sage was great. Rode all the way home in traffic and she didn’t jump out. Not too many cargo bikes you can easily carry up stairs. #omniumcargo #omniumminimax #cargobikedog"
But… While it works our dog stands up a lot and i find the shifting of her weight a bit problematic. Maybe for a smaller dog it would be fine. I think a Bullit would have been a better idea in the end but i was trying to find something easy to move in and out of our building.
I pine after a Bullitt, but unfortunately the price premium over a standard bike, combined with our location (Bundoora - close to the Ring Rd trail, but hemmed in by significant roads on all other sides) reduces the practicality of this.
Like so many things bike, we need to reach a critical mass before it’s viable as a “mass market” option.
I see these around Berlin a bit these days. Looks like a good solution in terms of manouverable cargo bike but with the load kept low to the ground. But expensive I expect. https://muli-cycles.de/de/
Hey fellow Berliner! A mate of mine bought one these a couple of months ago - Long Harry Übersicht – PEDALPOWER - handmade in Berlin.
He’s super happy with it and likes that the frame platform/width is a little more flexible than a Buillitt. That said, I’m still frothing on a Bullitt.
