So I’ve realised that one of my Axel caps has disappeared after my pedal felt a little wobbly and need to know whether its safe to ride without one, it seems as if the cap has some role in the structural well-being of the pedal itself.
If I need a replacement, can someone recommend me the cheapest place to get some?
I’ve tried a few online stores but the shipping ends up being 3x the cost of the cap. Which ends up being 25% the price of a set of new pedals.
this happened to me twice. the cap is essential to control the lateral position of the pedal, without it, you’ll start losing grease etc. i got a replacement from an australian online store, i think called phantom cycles, however i believe they don’t have any more left in stock, i think it cost around $5-10 inc postage
This has happened to me as well a couple of damn times. It really shits me to tears. It’s goddamn structurally important but made of the smooshiest plastic, so you can’t do it up tightly without rounding out that middle dealie bit that the hex thing goes in. I’m so angry about it that I’ve forgotten my words.
Anyway, after I snapped the spring whatchama’s on my last set of times I harvested the one remaining one (fucker) against future loss. I ride clips and straps these days so PM me your deets and I’ll post it to you.
and after the second one got lost, i dripped superglue round the edge, and haven’t had a problem since. recommended if you don’t plan on servicing them.
The bloody cap fell off half way through my tour, biggest PITA! I should have glued the damn cap on, but figured they’d be alright. Finding replacement caps is so damn hard.
Gah… I dunno whether I want to buy a third pair or move on to a different brand…
Clever design, if you plan on making money selling new pedals.
One thing I like about older bike parts is that they don’t have this type of planned obsolescence built in - they’re built to either last or be serviceable.
It’s pretty crap when new parts, ie: these pedals, are built with the same ethos as plastic toasters and ikea lamps.
I really like my atacs, I have three pairs now - one brand new, one a year old and a second-hand pair about ten years old. The oldest pair are the best built, with better end caps. They use a pin tool instead of allen key, though I’ve never needed to touch them. Funny thing is the newest pair almost look as if they’re trying to find design flaws to add in - the spindle itself narrows down to a much thinner neck, for no apparent reason.
Hugs - I think the aliums are the only ones with the allen key problem, the others I’ve seen still have the pin system. Don’t know if that makes them any less likely to pop out though.
PlanA, still have your cap and its working a treat
My newer ones are pin type as well… sent an email to wiggle and they said they’d contact the manufacturer about it. Hoping they can find me a replacement.
