tyres splitting

i’ve had 2 tyres split in the last 3-4 weeks. not the tube, the tyre. one was a veloflex, which, given how light they are i can sort of understand, but the other was a vittoria rando and those things are pretty staunch. anyone else had this shit happen to them?

split or cut?

do you mean in the sidewall or on the rolling tread?

rando was in the sidewall, the veloflex was a little on the sidewall, a little on the rolling thread.

they look more like spits than cuts. on neither occassion do i recall hitting glass or anything else that would 'cause such damage. i’d be just rolling along and hear a god-awful bang and then i’m njs walking that bitch.

You could be getting tube blow-outs. The tube can get pinched or is not seated on the rim properly. Over time it can escape through the sidewall/rim resulting in a big BOOM.
Most of the time the tyre is okay, but I have seen tyres damaged as well.

pretty certian these haven’t been from pinch flats. i always take care to make sure that the tube is seated correctly and that my tyres are inflated to a decent pressure.

1st world problems.

Maybe those NOS tyres you like using are all brittle? :expressionless:

The fact there is a loud ‘boom’ would indicate the tube has come in contact with the air. Either the tube has escaped out of the rim/tyre, or the tyre has catastrophically failed?

they are NIB, not NOS, you N00B!

yea, it’s just a pain. i should know better than to ride on brunswick street, though. so much glass and crap.
