I got an On-One track wheelset on my Pomp, with its cheap & nasty cog & lockring. The width of the cog threaded area wasn’t quite enough for the hub, so no matter how tight the lock ring was, the cog could still unscrew a 1/4 turn before it butted against the lockring.
I’m no powerhouse, but I would have stripped the threads out mightly quickly if I’d kept riding it. Replaced with a dura ace cog & lockring, and has been tight & solid since.
But it is not intended for, or needed for, track hubs where a counter threaded lockring is fitted.
For “suicide”, straight thread hubs with either no lockring, or a BB lockring of limited “locking” effectiveness, is used rotafixing is arguably the best way to sweat the cog on. Just be aware of the potential to damage the finish or integrity of the BB shell and chainstays when rotafixing.
So i went to abbotsford cycles and got my threads looked at and the result was that there was some strippage of the thread. So new hub i guess. Phil woods are to much, Durace are lik $190 still too much. I found an american dealer that sell Soma for $125. So i may get soma or the Velo. Still deciding.
This was a while back and things might be different now … Back when I was looking, Soma hubs were just re-badged Dimension Hubs which cost half of what Soma retails for. The quality of the Dimension hub is on par with Formula/Velocity but with the extra nice touch of having a hollow axle. Unless you really want the Soma brand name, you’ll be paying more than what it’s really worth.
How far back was this if you can remember? I was reading their site and it said “Redesigned for 2007! Beefier shell, stronger flanges, and shinier finish. Rear is threaded on both ends. Threads are “fixed-fixed” but most freewheels can fit on these.”
They are clearly different now. Without physically seeing the new Soma hub, I can’t comment if it’s any better than the Dimension. Based on looks, I’d say it isn’t. I can say that I’ve used Dimension, Velocity, White Industries and Phil wood and am happy with all of them. You pay for what you get. Dimension and Velocity may be cheaper, but they work well and offer great value for money. Personally, I wouldn’t pay for a Soma because I think they are over priced.
tighten that cog (rotafixing works SO much better than a chainwhip)
and tighten that lockring (one of those lockring tools works SO much better than a hammer and screwdriver or whatever)
my cog kept coming loose skidding and all until i finally managed to locate a proper lockring tool. crank that shit downn
Worked on both Velocity and Soma track hubs DL and they’ve both been sweet, replaced the bearings in the velocity (not it’s fault, just a few years of use) and now Tina is working on it (still fine). Ran mostly surly cogs I think.
