Velocity Wheelset

Hi all,
just wondering if anyone has any comments etc on the basic Velocity track wheelset with the Deep v rim. Given the price , are the hubs any good ? , how would they compare with something second hand but of better quality around the $400-500 mark.

Many thanks

get it with the aeroheads - I think it’s the same price. The deep Vs are ugly, crosswind prone tanks. I’m building up some D-A 28h hubs with aeroheads right now actually, and as always the manufacturing quality is tops.

I had a set but with aerohead rims. They are a very good wheelset. For just under $400 they worked great for me.

It really depends on what you want the wheels for. I used them for street riding in all kinds of weather. I wouldn’t do that with a higher priced campy or shimano wheel coz I can’t be bothered to service the bearings every time I ride in the wet.

If you’re going to use the wheels for the street, get the Velocities or a pair of ShifterBike wheels … unless the 2nd hand wheels you’re talking about are a pair of Phils.

If the wheels are for track, go for 2nd hand campys or shimanosin your price range.

Well, ugly is in the eye of the beholder, but ‘crosswind-prone’??? You serious Joel?

I notice crosswinds with Cosmic Carbones but never with Deep Vs and I’ve had (actually I still have) 2 pairs of Deep V wheels.

Did you notice croswinds with that GIANT E on the rear?

haha

No not really, particularly on the singletrack. But it does have a sound.

I’m just extrapolating from the effect I get from my aeroheads as it is. The mental image of hundreds of NY hipsters being blown off the brooklyn bridge because of their sail-like rims keeps me going during hard times.

Thanks for the replies . I did forget to mention that the wheels are for the track, to be used for club racing etc

Set of claissic Suntour Superbe wheels for sale in the parts section…

Peter,

Buy these ones. Largely touted as the best hubs around (pure track hubs)

I would if i didn’t have a pair already!!

do it, do it.

I haven’t really got that much experience with good wheels for the track, but I have a set of Deep V’s on the dualy MTB that have been abused for a good 6yrs. I’ve put them through hell and they’ve stood up to everything. So I could say that using these for a track bike would be grouse overkill, when something lighter and sleeker would do better.

My humble (hung-over) opinion
Chris
