Vintage HiFi Thread

Love the speaker stand design

Re: the phono stage thing. Won’t most amps of the 70s-80s era have them built in? I’ve got a sweet old Luxman that does, and most of the other old ones I’ve used have as well.

Something like this would be choice bro: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Vintage-JVC-Stereo-Integrated-Amplifier-A-X30-with-Phono-Input-in-Exc-Condition-/282067018937?hash=item41ac8124b9:g:HxwAAOSwiYFXGKZl

Definitely, it would be a rare amp even in to the 90s that doesn’t have a phono input.

From memory all the other inputs are at 2V and phono is at a much lower voltage.

I think that’s what they were saying, maaaaaate

If so it wasn’t particularly clear. Could easily have been interpreted to mean you need a separate pre-amp component.

You’re using the wrong input.

I remember when I first got my record player, hooked it all up, put Black Keys Thickfreakness on all ready to be blown away, then “…WHY IS IT SO QUIET!!!”

Then I learnt about the phono stage. Ended up with a NAD PP2 preamp.

I’m not an ebay thug (think I’ve bought one thing in my life) but I am currently thugging over some hifi equipment i barely understand!

It’s funny, used to play records all the time until Charlotte’s cheapy carked it. Now all I can think about it that opening riff of Obituary’s ‘Slowly We Rot’. Fuuuuuuuu.

thread is so unclear.
topic discussed many times.

let’s not get into moving magnet and moving coil for the sake of jamesy’s need to just listen to a rekkid

Options! A lot also have dual speaker outputs and or a radio tuner. Radio national is important! all within 50km of 3000.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/252369365994 (This is sweet as it has switched and unswitched power on the back, so you can hookup your TT and iphone dock etc to it. Just grab some cheap US to AUS plug converters.)

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/131847381618 misspelled, so might be cheap.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/252295893999 bit older but cool tuner light up dial  only one aux input.

Now in possession of:
Harman/kardon HK6200
Rega Planar 2
Sherwood bookshelfs

Got these on loan for a month which is nice to help me make my mind up.

They sound quite balanced and bookshelf speakers are the right size for my room. The rega is bloody beautiful, love the straight tone arm.

sorry late to this, thanks for the offer! But got some stuff on ebay now. Cheers.

What did you get James?

A technics whatsit. Now to thug over some sweet speakers in Willi. eBay is great. Welcome to 2001 James.

Get any stuff Jamesy?

Yes I did! Got a technics amp and the kef speakers you recommended. Went to Carlton audio visual, and they set me up with a new cartridge and belt. Got it all set up last week, sounds great! Thanks for all your help everybody (especially mike d and smuglord).

Turntable was running slow, took it in expecting major surgery, apparently just needed a new belt, stoked!

Do you know where to get one? There’s a great thread about where to buy a belt…
