Vintage HiFi Thread

I’ll give her $50

Liam - I paid $170 (or was it $190?) for the same technics turntable, a later model Yamaha amp , a marantz CD player & some nice Coral speakers.

i reckon about $200-ish for all comonents would be a decent price.

Sorry mate - I am hoping to get her more than that. I am not trying to sell them here, more trying to get a ballpark as to what would be a good asking price. I will explain the situation to you about my mum when I see you next.

EDIT: Thanks Rod!

EDIT EDIT: She just found the original receipt. $1656.80 in 1990!

do a few “sold” item searches on ebay, check some asking prices on gumtree and subtract the ‘tell em they’re dreaming’ factor and you’ll be pretty much in the know.

package the amp/TT/spkrs together, sell the dvd / tape deck separately?

Rod’s pricing seems to be bout right.

The Amp and the turntable are the selling point - maybe the speakers depending on what you mean by LARGE. Tape decks are really only wanted be people who have a lot of tapes (who normally will already have a system) or people who are into cassettes (small market, despite what the internet says). Big speakers take up a lot of room and decent bookshelves aren’t that expensive anymore so people aren’t paying a premium for semi vintage speakers, unless they’re something really special.

I hope you get as much as you can for them, I was just letting you know what I paid for mine and what the going price around here for that sort of stuff. Good luck!

Yo Audiophiles,

I am hella into music at the moment and just moved house (have to leave behind the great system there), need speakers and an amp. Mainly listen to disco, funk, boogie, house, techno, pop, reggae.

Been deciding about whether I want to go the vintage hifi route (tonnes of stuff on gumtree in Canberra) or just get a pair of active monitors (Yamaha YS8/JBL’s etc). I realise these are VERY different setups. Will be playing records/mp3’s for at home listening and many hours of dancing in my room. I mix every now and then and will soon be the owner of a new synth (this makes monitors seem more sensible). Probably $500 max for everything but preferably less. Thoughts? Not vintage but some of the T-class amps look pretty good to me.

Found a pair of these old/huge philips speakers in the shed that aren’t hooked up, gave them a test and they seem to be functional but have no idea how to pair an amp with them (they sounded very tinny/quiet out of the marantz one I check them with, maybe this means they’re kaput?)

Only photo I have of my old TT setup is this SC one. It was all pretty dodgy but I loved it. Looking forward to nicer/consistent sounding stuff.

Also looking for advice. Have just inherited a Rega planer 2. Looking for advice re. amp and speakers. Really no idea where to start. Would be a budget job if possible. I know nothing about Hifi stuff, but I really want to listen to this obituary record I just bought.

Any advice much appreciated!!

Those regas are rubbish jamesy. I’ll get rid of it for you if you want.

Sean: general rule imo is that if you are into dance music eventually you’ll want to mix yr records (which you’re already doing), which means vintage hifi route = a bad idea. Monitors are a no brainer if you are looking to buy a synth soon as well…

Them Rega turntables are sweet! I got a Rega P3. Depends on what you want to spend really, I was lucky to nab other matching older english AMP & Speakers to run with mine for fairly cheap.

NAD Amp & Rogers LS7 speakers. Sadly since moving recently, its all in boxes and not set up :frowning:

Gumtree does throw up some good stuff, but like bicycles on Gumtree. You gotta be quick & try and listen to the speakers before handing over the cash. Sometimes not the easiest thing to do. If you wanna get going, just look around for some japanese stuff. It goes cheaper then the German & English stuff but is quite good and generally more available.

Thanks gyp. No thanks to Jono.

The thing holding me back regarding the second hand maket is my complete lack of knowledge. And I’m guessing my ears are as shit as any digital age metal meathead. I get frothing over led Zeppelin vol. four on an average deck so who knows!

Any specific brands that are good quality and reasonably cheap to look out for?

Yeah that’s what I figured, however they’ll get a tonne of use just listening and I thought monitors had a narrow sweet spot (you can’t move around the room much without effecting how you perceive the sound). If I get monitors then probably JBL305’s

Of the the late 70s early 80’s Amps/receivers; technics, pioneer or marantz are usually very good.

The mid to late 80’s stuff is ok but typically kinda ugly.

The mid 90’s any japanese stuff is usually cheap like ~$50-70 for an amp, just make sure it has a phono channel, again Pioneer, technics, Denon, marantz etc.

English brand from the 90s tend to be more expensive but very good quality, for amps check out NAD, for speakers, Mission, Kef, Tannoy and wharfedale (but not wharfedales later stuff as they went a bit low end)

After the mid nineties only higher end (expensive) amps came with phono stages.

I’d buget $50-100 for a 90’s amp and $100-$150 for a set of good small to medium “bookshelf speakers”, also budget $10-$20 of new heavy guage speaker wire from Jaycar.

Some nice sellers will have the speakers all hooked up for you to listen before handing over cash, other to check is how the rubber surround of the woofers is looking, it does degrade over time, and whilst is repairable costs ~$50 a speaker.

Great thanks mikdee! Another for the ignorant: what exactly is phono stages? (Yes i googled)

It’s the channel that correctly amplifies the input from a turntable. You need a phono stage to run a turntable.

I think a phono input needs a preamp or something something

They’re different to tape/aux/etc inputs

Edit: yeah what Mikdee said

MikeD, I’ve pmd you (promise it will only be once haha).

Heavy, if you find some speakers I’ve got a Nad 3020 collecting dust that I can loan out (I don’t really want to sell it, as I’m still holding on to the dream that one day I’ll have a bike shed with space for tunes.)

There’s enough room in my new house to finally set my speakers up, I’ve had them in storage for the past few years.
They’re late 70s Bose 901s, they were made to reflect the sound around the room by bouncing it off of the walls behind them, so they basically face the wall, very room filling when set up well. I had to restore them when I got them as the rubber had deteriorated badly and one of the stands was broken, they still need a little bit more work. But they work and they look great.

^^ I’ve got some B&W speakers you can team up with Dal’s amp if you want. Disclaimer: I don’t know if they work.
