Pretty interesting/nice looking welds - Welder Scott Raabe Places Interlocking Patterns of Molten Metal Between Pipes | Colossal

44 Bikes have got tig welding down to a fine art.

Wow, speedvagen should employ him as their stuff lately is hideous

the guy in the first post no doubt has excellent torch control, but the weld sequence (weave deposition) is not suitable for bikes (i kno those welds aren’t on bikes) and potentially not the best for the pipe fittings pictured either (though i don’t have enough info to comment).
the pretty colours are indeed pretty, but would also be removed by the post welding pickling and passivation processes required to restore the full corrosion resistance of the stainless steel being welded.

what a weld looks like on the surface is quite possibly the least important factor in determining how good it is at actually holding stuff together. (don’t get me wrong, shit looking welds can often be shit but pretty doesn’t equal good)

not hatin, just dropping mad knowledge bombz y’all*

case in point, a weld so pretty (in terms of teh colours and pattern at least, it’s not very even) i kept a picture as a desktop background:

it failed the corrosion test i was peforming on it woefully, whihc is why desalinated water is so expensive ;p

  • i may or may not be a complete douche, however.

Genuinely enjoyed this comment - was the type of response I was hoping for: some insight on strength vs prettiness.

we are spooky frames go okay

Thats because they’re being welded by Frank the Welder.

qft

The welds on US-made Intenses are spot on too.

44 Bikes, this time it’s titanium.
