wheel building

hi
just wondering if there is anyone in Perth that builds wheels? I have been quoted between 60 and 70 per wheel plus a dollar a spoke. so it gets kinda expensive. Cheers

do you mean DIY at home or reputable wheel builder?

if the latter, have you tried cyclemania or quantum cycles in north perth?

just someone at home but still knows what they are doing. Its not the best wheel set so I don’t really want to pay like $200 just for the build plus spokes but thanks for those two places i will give them a call tomorrow.

I had a front wheel built yesterday by a guy in bassendean. he did an absolutely great job and only cost about $60. His name is George, email gclark8@bigpond.net.au and let him know what you’re wanting.

sweet thanks for that is that including spokes cheers

I think he does spokes for about 25c each

I had my rear wheel built at Bike-Force Myaree same day for about $60 I believe, that included spokes and fitting a new 16T cog:)

thanks everyone for the help i ended up getting them built at a place on south st in freo. he charges 35 for the build and then a dollar a spoke i will report back on the build quality cheers

george has been recommended to me by another forumer as well

george kills it, he’s just a retired old guy in bassandean who lives for bikes. he does it for literally fuck all so he can buy lunch. if you’re happy with what he does flip him a little extra and he’ll take care of you ey.

i have got about 4 wheels built by george and all are good if not better than some built by bike stores

Aldo is the best. Getting new wheels soon, they will be done by him as I have done with the past 6 wheels I have since swapping to him on the recommendation by many many riders

This being said I haven’t had experience with George, but have read some glowing reviews online.

For what it’s worth, I highly recommend George in Bassendean ( gclark8@bigpond.net.au ). He does great work, he charges bugger all, and he really knows bikes.

hey boys, justy wondering if anyone remember what kind of spokes/nipples he uses? or did everyone buy their own?

Quantum do a fine build. They don’t piss around with apparent bomb proof wheel building techniques handed down through generations for wheels that will be used for straight up street use. They tell it like it is, are cheap and fast.

how much did the charge? what kind of spokes/nipples?

sapim spokes. I usually only use DT Swiss (no idea why). Open pro rim and miche Primito large flange 32 hole which i provided. The charge for build and spokes plus rim tape came to $80. You may be able to get cheaper but its a solild build no doubt. Took three days.

i was going to provide the spokes but was gettting some discrepencies with the length. there is room for error when your doing calculations but i figured for all the farting around they can supply theirspokes.

Really cheap wheel component swhen you think about it. Unless your lacing some Phil hub to a campag NOS rim then why drop a fortune on the build itself.
