When track cogs aren't track cogs.

I’m looking at building a new set of wheels for the road fixie (drops & brakes) and wondering if it’s time to try a fixed wheel hub that uses a spline or bolt on cog.

There seems to be two options:
ISO/6 bolt cogs - Phil and Velosolo
Splined cogs - White Ind.

Has anyone run either of these and share the experience?

I used a sugino cog carrier system for a little while and I found that the alloy was so soft that it developed play between the cog carrier and cog, and as a result would loosen the lockring.

A mate is using a Miche cog carrier system and occasionally having similar issues.

I’ve heard nothing but good things about bolt on cogs.

A mate has a shimano XT front disc hub, uses it on the rear with an ISO cog. Been going strong for years. Can’t remeber if there were any implications for spacing or chainline but it’s easy to figure out. Match it with a non-disc XT hub for the front. Cheaper than Phils or WI, and surely as good.

This is certainly an option. This single biggest issue is replacement cogs, the flip side is that there’s no thread so unless you actually wear one out it’s no big deal.
I’m a fan of XT hubs for the right application, use them for polo with solid cromo bolt up axle - bombproof, cheap and serviceable.

Could always run a 105 front hub I guess.

Worked like a charm on this pig. Skid with confidence

I use white industries splined set ups, they kick buttocks

Surely the wear rate on the the cog is exactly the same, regardless of how it’s attached to the hub.

The single biggest issue is not being able to go to your LBS and buy another cog.
The cog will never have a damaged thread

Ah right, now I’m following.

Cycle underground… Problem solved. I think they are doing them for $20.

I like that XT hub Bodge neat idea.

There is a recent thread on Rotorburn where the guy did the XT hub ghetto fix. Here you go:Vintage Colnago Fixie Build Project

Really? Last time I spoke to them they didn’t sell anything anymore. It was all done through Primate, Candy Cranks and Pony Bikes.

Admittedly it was a while ago, but I just emailed Jon the specs and he posted the ring out. Worth a try.

i bought a chainring from them about a month ago.

called and they were doing a run that day.

the guys there are always super friendly, and i love what they are doing.

feltgoodman…

I was specially asking about disc tab mounts to retro-fit a tab to and old GT frame.
Got one of Don’s Feng Shui to play with.
Didn’t know that did bolt-on track cogs.

Will probably go with Velosolo option as I’ve bought from them before and they are also very helpful.
Lovin’ these chainrings too.
