Where to buy a used single speed in Melbourne?

Hello from Finland!

I ride fixed here on the other side of the globe.

A friend of mine lives in Melbourne and is looking for a bike to commute. He isn’t into bikes, and i’m trying to help him so he won’t end up with a shitty bike from the supermarket.

Where should he look for a used single speed in Melbourne? His budget is 300AUD (I don’t know your typical prices, but here you can get something really basic for that…)

So if you have a craigslist or some other service you use to browse used bikes in the Melbourne area, I would appreciate any links. Also if you have a beater/conversion for sale within the budget mentioned, even better.

Thanks! Sorry if the Melbourne thread was the wrong place to post…

edit. My friend is 170-175cm tall

^That’s our version of Craigslist.

Nice Surly, how do you go riding in the snow season? I’m considering a move to someplace colder and am curious to cycling that time of year.

Ahh the old $300 budget strikes again

Thanks!

Riding in the snow can be really fun or a pain in the ass, depending on the conditions. If the roads have been plowed and it isn’t too icy, then it can be like this (from Finland): [video=vimeo"]

Usually it’s fine if you don’t mind the cold and put a lighter gear ratio. I’m sporting a 49x17 and it’s a bit rough at times. The worst is when there’s alot of snow, then the temperature goes to +1, the snow melts to slush, then when it freezes again it creates an icy spike mat covering everything…

I think it’s actually a good idea not buy an expensive bike first. You learn more when you have to work on it, you learn what you like etc. Paying your dues or something. I wouldn’t say it’s best to buy total shit, but getting an ok used beater is the way to go if you ask me. So what i’m saying is fuck you too mate!

edit. ps. Any comments on the local cheap completes: Reid, Chappelli, Samson?

BEST Mountain Bikes|Road Bikes|City Bikes|Fixie Bikes for Sale in Australia forget the ones above.

I wouldn’t not get one, especially if you found one cheap second hand.

However both the Reid and Chappelli are heavy as, with the wheelset alone around 4kg.

I sure as hell wouldn’t get one, no matter how cheap

Yeah, that’s what i thought.

You have a lot less used single speeds going around than we do here in Utopia land. Or I don’t know where to look.

Thanks for the help. I’m grateful if you PM me if you find a good link/have something for sale. Peace.
