which cranks should I buy (1x10)

Urrr. Currently running SLX M665 (2x9). Is arse too.

haha. Look I know 1x11/1x10 rocks, but if you are having serious problems with Shimano RD’s there is something seriously wrong- they just work.

oratiohh, (sighs)… The problem is that that I am running a lower guide (because my unclutched Shadow RD was throwing chains like no ones biz). Unfortunately the lower guide coupled with tacky soil in Rotorua that results in chain suck, is causing jams on upshift under load. I don’t like the M665 because the throw is too great, which means I have to run a bashering cos over overshifting, and it has been a bitch to fine tune on my last two steel frames. The 10-speed version which replaced this is meant to be much better, but yeah nah, they’re shit. Carry on…

I have x9 on my stumpy fsr, 2x10 and have never had a drama
Front shifting is slow but meh it’s a mtb I rarely need to quickly smack it quickly in the big dog.
The other noticeable difference is how quite the clutched rear mech is without chain slap.

I’m happy with my set up but will be ditching the avids for xt brakes,
The avids suck

Thanks ppls. Just ordered XT M780 right shifter and XT M786 Shadow+ RD for 1x10 650B build early next year.
Looking at an AbsoluteBlack ring mentioned earlier in the thread. Will run guide & regular ring to sort ring size first.

Should have considered the saint shifter. Killer combo with the shadow plus mech.

To the best of my knowledge the XT and Saint shifters have the same internals, only the difference being the Saint has shorter levers. Correct me if I am wrong.

Bike has not been built, it will certainly be considered.
Was a little disappointed that the XT RD is only available in GS & SGS.
The SRAM X9 Type 2 RD is available in three sizes.
Maybe I should have been looking at Saint RD as well.

Are you putting this on a your Pipedream? If so I would look at the wide-range Zee RD (or Saint). Have read glowing reviews about the Zee. If you think that you might want something that you can potentially put on a duallie with chain growth, or think you might swap back to 2x10, or might try out some of the 10 speed 42T mods- ie General Lee. Stick with a XT GS.

If you go with Sram you’ll need to run a mid cage with a 11-36 cassette anyways.

I just scored a 10spd X9 type two at the swap meet, man the clutch is pretty stiff to over come in your hand. (1st time I’ve had a play with one off a bike)

saint m820 has longer levers, plus ball bearings in the shifter, both making it easier to shift, especially against the clutched mech.

no need to spend money on the saint rear mech, just stick with the med cage xt s+.

sram short cage is designed for 1x setups only, total capacity is 25t, and unlike shimano, they’re not conservative. If you run 10T difference or under at the front and 12-27T at the rear you can get away with it. My 36/46 x 11-28 is at the extreme of what is possible without exploding the mech, 27T total, big-big works, but I’m going to change the cassette out.

Pipedream is staying with 3x9 SLX group set.
This is for the new Soma B-Side 650B frame released in January.
Will stick with XT that I’ve ordered and see how it goes.

Yep, that’s what I’d read. And this is for a 1x10 setup only. I’d like to go 1x11 but as it’s so shiney & new it’s still a bit exxy, plus you need a specific rear hub or at least swap out the driver body, seems too much commitment if I don’t like it.

At least with the XT I can fall back to 2x10.

Ben, you really do take that N+1 to a whole new level. I was just checking out the Soulcraft Option B - now thats a 650B I wouldn’t mind giving a go.

Yeah I want a photo and list of all your bikes and frames Ben

Really? Haters gunna hate.
Most of the crappy bikes are gone - except for a Mongoose IBOC & Repco Olympic 12.
Oh, and the Giant Iguana - mainly because it’s green. Giant Green Iguana.

I’m not hating I’m just jealous, hell I encourage it

Haters? Wh said anything about haters?? We be FOAenablers

Come on. Spill the beans. Whats the tally?

Hope you’ve kept Spizz’s Orangee Gemini… That thing has the makings of best pub bike eva.

There are quite of few of these on the chopping block. I’m out of space and not all are getting ridden enough.

Captial 24 is currently setup as a trials bike and it loads of fun if not a touch heavy.
Suburban is running 24" wheels, rear brake only & setup for riding park/urban.

I’ll take #'s 1, 5 and 11 to help you clear some space.
