Which mini U lock: New York or Evolution?

I’ve got room to store only one bike, so no n+1 or Pub Bike for me. My current ride is the best I’ve ever had, and still kinda newish, so I’d like to upgrade my security to a mini U lock (plus cable, which I’ve already got). Could be an opportunity for a group buy here, but I can’t decided between these two:

New York Fahgettaboudit Mini, security rating 12 (highest), 2.09 kg, or

Evolution 2000 Mini, security rating 8, 0.81 kgs

Is lugging the New York worth the increased strength & added deterrent?

Has anyone had a bike stolen via a busted or picked Evolution?

Poll and discuss…

Evo. The New York is too big and too heavy for Melbourne.

I’ve got a New York Fageddaboutit Mini and while it is a brilliant lock and I have no fears of anyone nicking my bike, it weighs a tonne… Weighs over 2kg, something I didn’t factor in when I bought it from the States…

If you’re gonna be locking it to a rack/pole and leaving it there, it’s brilliant. If you’re gonna be carrying it with you go the Evolution. That’s what I’m looking into at the moment.

There’s always ABUS too. I use one of their reinforced cable locks, rated at 8. And they’re long enough to wear around your waste which I’ve always preferred to carrying chunky u-locks.
2c

evolution is great. small & light & etc etc. i cable my wheels as well if im leaving it for long periods…

if youve got fairly tight geometry you can get the evolution thru frame, one wheel and a street pole too, which is handy.

i use one of these also and had no issues.
its also very handy for hanging your shopping bags off after youve nipped down to the supermarket if you wear it over your shoulder…

i have a mini and one of those kryptonite fuck off big chains. it’s a pain and i don’t use it all that much.

I have the kryptonite chain with lock, evo 2000 mini and the large Fahgettaboudit,
If your gonna lock your bike up after dark it’s good to have a few decent locks, sometimes I use all 3.
Overkill but I’ve once had a bike stripped but they never got the wheels and frame.

I carry my evo mini with me for short stops or whatever but I’ve got a Abus D and a cable on the racks where I usually park during the day. Mini on the back to the rack, D through the frame and front wheel and the cable around everything just to be sure.
Go the mini, easy to carry = always use it.

None of these locks will withstand 40" bolt cutters.

If you have to lock your bike up regularly for long periods (especially in the same place) your best defence is having a bike that’s not as good as the ones it’s parked near.

tis true.
find a real nice bike with dodgy combination cable lock from kmart. park next to it.

Yup. Seen the vid. New York cut in about 8 seconds. Scary stuff. There’s two situations here:

  1. You’ll need a lock that’s good enough to deter the occasional/opportunist bike thief.

  2. No lock will deter the professional bike thief so you’ll need to either ride something unattractive, park in more secure areas or be prepared to lose your bike.

If you’re carrying it around with you then the extra weight of the new york far outweighs (scuse the pun) it’s extra security.

If someone has the tools (ie epic bolt cutters) to get through an evo then they will probably do a pretty good job on the new york too.

If you’re locking a bike in the same public place every day though, i would look st something with a chain/cable so you can lock the frame and both the wheels.

I made my own with a really heavy chain from bunnings and a relatively expensive padlock.

When I bought it, the guy cut it with boltcutters, but they were gigantic boltcutters of doom, I assume anyone motivated enough to lug that about could get through pretty much anything.

With Kyrptonite and Abus they use Boron alloy steel (harder) as well as hexagonal chain profiles which make it difficult to grip the chain links with cutters.
Hey, I’m just rolling off the marketing shpeel.

Better to get the lockwood precut lengths of chain, ~1m long and hardened, add a huge padlock, heavy but secure…

I agree.

And if you’re locking a very good bike in the same public place every day, you’d be better off locking up a not so good bike instead.

Saw a bike near my work a while back, had 2 locks on it, but they were those $2 Shop, coloured noodle, type ones!
