11sp alfine shifter......with campagnolo?

anyone own an 11sp alfine shifter (Shimano Alfine SL-S700 11-Speed Rapidfire + Lever) and know the cable travel on the thing? i am thinking of changing a bike to make it more comfortable for a family friend, and this would be gnawesome, but campag don’t make them which sucks, so this looks like my only option.
shanks.

From memory, the 8sp hubgear shifters pulled quite a bit more cable than the equivalent 8sp derailleur shifters. So I’m guessing the 11sp also pulls too much compared to Shimano / Campy.

It’s not your only option. You can always get a Campy 11sp barcon / TT shifter and fit that to some swept back bars (Nitto / VO for example). They won’t fit into MTB bars though.

Or…

Get some Paul thumbies.

Velo Orange do them too.

Sussex makes a brifter for Alfine 11:
Sussex Enterprises - Innovative bicycle components for Shimano internal hubs. Shaft drive bicycles, chainless bicycles, road bicycles, mountain bikes.
They come in silver or black and I believe they cost about A$350 for the pair of lever/shifter.

I’d go down this path.
Campagnolo 11speed commuter- you’ll have to post pics when/if it gets built!

Shortsie, I realised on the ride into work this morning that that was also an option, assuming that Campagnolo TT shifters are still compatible with the old DT braze on boss. A much better option too.

Sir Kev: As I understand it, the issue is that an OFG has a high zoot roadie with 11 speed Record/Chorus, but not the flexibility to ride with drop bars. So in order to flat bar the bike without changing the entire drivetrain, some sort of 11speed flat bar shifting setup is needed. The Versa shifters will suffer from the same issue as the Shimano Alfine11 flat bar shifters, in that they pull too much cable.

I will measure the full amount of cable pulled by the Alfine shifter… tomorrow.

Oh ok, I get it now. I thought he was trying to run an Alfine with his 11 speed brifters.

I don’t think the 11 speed barends are convertible to Paul Thumbies. The guy might have to slum it with a 9 or 10 speed cassette and the appropriate shifters. Unless he wants to run friction for 11 speed which might be a bit annoying.

[edit]Here’s a pic of the uggo (and probably unsuited to Paul thumbie) 11 speed barends:

Apparently 11sp ergos work perfectly with Shimano 9sp mechs/cassette. Shame this is the wrong direction, but it’s worth storing away for future reference.

The other issue is that only SRAM has a uniform cable pull over the range of 3mm per gear, but “Campy 10 shifters pull 2.5mm five times, 3mm twice and 3.5mm twice”, and Shimano is also non-uniform.

Here’s an article that explains the many SRimergo combinations that you can get away with:
Rear Shifting

The easiest solution is likely to be SRAM/Shimano 10sp MTB shifters and a matching mech/wheel.

Really? So how do they get around having uniform spacings between sprockets?
So SRAM’s ‘extact actuation’ is more than marketing wank eh?

The non-uniform cable travel from the shifter is converted into a uniform lateral movement of the jockey wheels by the rear derailleur parallelogram geometry. If you read the CTC article I posted, there’s a section that shows how you can route the cable differently and modify the derailleur movement to make other combinations work.

Interesting… maybe electronic shifting is the future after all.

I had the exact same reaction.

Glayvin!

the ‘old fat guy’ in question was actually fitter than most people on this forum, at the age of 60, until he woke up with no movement in his left leg due to the advanced and virulent cancer on his brain. 3 days out of surgery he wanted to ride his bike. he’s also italian and likes nice italian stuff(super record and an eps to be precise). is that a crime?

but yes, thanks for all the replies, still sorting stuff out.

Sorry to assume OFG status, hope he’s recovering well.

I don’t know how the SR11 TT shifters mount, but would they fit onto the ends of some porteur / moustache / north road bars?

Another option, if you have both time and money to burn, is to contact Jesse @ Speed Shop, he can likely machine a custom index plate for a barcon shifter, that you could then mount onto a Paul thumbie or similar. He was offering a Nexus 8sp plate for a shimano 8sp barcon at one point.

I came across this today, i think it could help. allows for different component combos including Shimano 10sp - Campy 11sp

Yeah, Shortsie, that would do it, Weight Weenies suggests that the 11sp mech has the same actuation as Campy 10sp. So paired up with the SL-R770 flat bar 10 sp shifters it should index properly over 10 of the 11 sprockets. The only issue is the front shifter, which may not work well with the Campy crankset, as it specifies a particular front mech (and assumes a Shimano crankset, but this shouldn’t matter much as ring spacing is similar.)

The Microshift TS-83-10 get good reviews too and are worth considering. (Keeps the bike Shimano free and saves money  )
