2012 SRAM RED BB30 crank install help!

ok boys and girls, help!

Received my 2012 SRAM RED BB30 group and in the process of installing.

The crankset has this new ‘pre load adjuster’ spacer thing and its got me off my game!

Nothing on youtube has anything specific on installation (that i could find), and while following the manual im still a little unsure.

Main problem is after tightening the crank, theres still a 2-3mm gap between DS crank and BB, so plenty of play there.

This was my process after greasing all points as per manual

1)secured preload adjuster on NDS crank, clockwise until it hits the crank arm, finger tight.
2)install NDS crank, install DS crank
3) tighten crank bolt, i didnt do it to the 48-54 nm as per manual, but i put a fair bit of force on to it.

So now theres 2-3mm of play.

Manual says to gently ‘tap’ the DS crank to seat the crank into the BB. I could basically do this by hand.

Now the next step is a bit of an educated guess from following the manual.

The ‘tap’ has effectively moved the ‘gap’ onto the NDS crank and BB, so now i screw the preload adjuster anti clockwise until it touches the bb, and theres no more gap, finger tighten again.

I then tighten the grub screw on the preload adjuster so theres no ‘gap’ on the preload adjuster itself.

seems to have taken up the slop and theres no more play.

does this sound right??

How #passionate do you feel right now?

That’s the Campagnolo tool, he needs the SRAM one!

Hahahaha.

Edit. Yes that’s right. Sometimes you may need an extra spacer, but if there is no play you win…

Sorry to dig up an old thread. I am having issues with my sram red bb30 cranks. I noticed a rubbing sound once every rotation on the non drive side. upon closer inspection it appears there is a particular point that is tighter than the rest.

In order to get rid of the sound completely I have to loosen the adjuster to a point that leaves too much play. If i tighten it more the sound happens for a longer period of the rotation.

It is hard to explain the sound but it is a bit like a “scchhhhhhipptt” - or like sand rubbing along something. it is very quiet. The impact is that when I allow the cranks to spin freely they slow down at the same point each time.

Any idea how to fix this problem.

sounds like maybe the bearings may not be sitting in straight/flat?

What cranks and what frame?
Should go spacer/washer, bearing clip in bb shell on drive side.
Then on the non drive there is an added wave washer

I’m having trouble with my Sram S900 BB30 setup, this thread has reminded me and seems like the right place.

The crank is in, spins great and has no play. I did have to use almost 1cm of spacers either side of the frame on my unknown model Focus. The problem is my cranks sit out pretty wide and the FD doesn’t shift up to the big ring easily, I have to use the smallest cogs on the rear to get the front to shift up. Is it possible my BB spindle is too wide? not sure if this is an option for BB30 spindles.

The S900 has a longer spindle than Red/Force so it can be used in BBright frames too. You definitely need a few spacers on BB30 with that crank. I’ve never set one up so I can’t say for sure what the problem might be.

Have you adjusted the fd limit screws?

If you wanna throw money at the problem, I’ll shortly be selling my Force compact crank (172.5mm).

Going to jump in here as well. Not SRAM Red, but BB30 related. I bought some Rotor 3DF BB30 cranks and a Rotor BSA30 bottom bracket. If I tighten the cranks then they seem to prevent the BB from moving freely. Would this be because I don’t have an O-ring on the NDS?

I assumed the spindle was different but didn’t have another around to compare it to. I’m just going to ride without FD shifting until I can afford a Sram Red crankset.

I spent hours adjusting the FD in many different ways to get it to work. I also respaced the spindle to the left which worked for the FD but then my legs didn’t work properly.

Fsa have an exploded bb30pic some where just check you have all the parts

My crankset is sram red 22 (exogram), frame is swift ultravox ti, i have just removed the cranks and there is no wave washer. looking at the instructions there is no mention of a wave washer at all for bb30.

should i be purchasing a wave washer and reinstalling?

edit: seems like for exogram cranks there is no need for wave washer? problem is persisting after crank removal and reinstall. Could bearings not being installed be the issue like jase pointed out?
