I built up some shiny wheels with m730s, solid axles (aftermarket change), H Plus Son TB14s today, original 6 speed Uniglide, modded to 9 speed for currency. Hot shit.
XT hubs were the shit. Now that title has “trickled down” to SLX. Enjoy the cheaplihood!
+1 the Shimano dynamo hub I use it on my Fuji touring with B&M lights and its fantastic, you can feel a very slight shudder at low speed, but you wont be able to notice anything at normal riding pace.
And honestly you won’t be able to notice any drag when riding, 200 extra grams is about the same as batteries anyway.
So which of the Shimano hubs are disc brake compatible?
The Australian site is terrible.
Are the Nexus hubs really 110 OLD? That seems weird.
I see quite a few of the Shimano hubs listed on eBay with an output of 2.4W and not 3.0W.
Are these old stock/model? Shimano DH-3N80 Dynamo 32h Rim Brake Front Hub | eBay
The 3N80 is the best Shimano dyno (Joel, is there an Alfine dyno with 3N80 spec internals?), the 3N72/3D71(disc)/3N70 preceded it and the xx30 series are low end. 3N80 is 32H only, no disc. The LX (DH-T660 / T665) and Alfine (DH-S501) versions have disc options.
The Alfine hub shell seems to be idenical to the DH-3D71 and is quite hefty at 735gms (with QR and terminal). The Deore LX DH-T665 by comparison seems to have the same hubshell as the DH-3N72 with the provision of a rotor spline. And weighs in at a more reasonable 560gms (without QR). Similar to the DH-3N80 but with a steel axle, so I have read on another forum.
There are only two things that are making me look towards the SonDelux. 1) weight, and 2) I have been told that the dynamo side bearings are quite inaccessable, and are thus a hassle to service. I’m sure Joel can shed some light on the latter.
The 3N80 dropped a lot of weight from the 72, but if you want disc you’re stuck with Alfine / Deore or a Schmidt. Or perhaps the new Supernova? (Supernova Lighting Systems - Infinity S COncept 399g, 32H, centerlock mount).
Shimano dynamo side bearings are nigh on inaccessible for most people, and even adjusting the preload on the other side is difficult due to the magnets.
Damn those Supernova hubs look sweet. The Infinity S looks very tidy. Have to say that I’m pretty keen on the Infinity 8. The “Freespin Switch” which moves the magnets apart when not in use is very cool.
But hey for you Shimano lovers. I just found this on a German site - the brand spanking XT dyno hub:
Meh, if you really want to save energy turn your lights off and run the best tyres you can afford. When there’s no current draw the additional load is equivalent to a 1/1000 gradient. i.e. stuff all.
Euros have all the best dynamo gear. Starbike/bike24 are other good e-tailers.
I built a centrelock XT dynamo into an A319 last night, 32H. Hope to wire things up tonight and will give impressions/a ride to anyone who wants to check it out (and is a trustworthy type)
Bike24 is cheap, but OH SO SLOW. One month from order to arrival, no tracking information for the 24 days before delivery (ie once it left Germany). A nervous wait.
Blakey- does Shutter Precision still win the ‘price performance’ equation for dynamo hubs?
I note Supernova have their switchable hub, but you mention this isn’t a big deal in that when the light is turned off, the resistance is lowered, is that right?
I have a SP hub built into a front road wheel and it works great. The downside of the SP hubs are the flange width is really narrow which sucks.
I’m about to pull the trigger on the 15mm SP version coming out in a few months. The dimensions of the hub look good, 55mm flange spacing- isn’t that better than SONdelux??
