Ray.
A Minor Place (this is my local so I’ve had a coffee there every day for 2 years or so I may be bias).
Brother Bubba Budan.
East Brunswick Project.
As for hot chocolate, I haven’t had one for a long time but Fraus in North Melbourne used to be amazing (and vegan!).
smith st: kent st and suede (i <3 suede)
brunswick: atomica is the only really decent place for coffee imo, I dont really like it from mario’s, as I have never appreciated bitter kremer as a sign of good coffee, don vincenzo’s is better, I think (but still prefer atomica)
lygon: university cafe is ok, tbh I think that the restaurants have overtaken the coffee culture there. I wouldnt go to brunetti’s unless I was working at la mama and had a 5minute break to get a drink, otherwise practically anywhere else is better…
swanston: rue babylon (just off swanston on lt lonsdale) the one at melbourne uni is pretty decent, not sure what they’re called though, I really like castro’s which is just inside melbourne uni…
(can tell I’m at uni eh :> )
Hot chocolate: not exactly been the weather lately for hot drinks, but I have to admit that I really do like san churros HC’s… if it makes me a sellout w/e
if I was near chapel st, I’d go for piccolo on high st, near st edmonds rd(sp?) great sushi place next door, and of course one of my places of work is a part of swinburne
Mario’s on glenferrie is the place I go, I’ve heard great things about liar liar; I went to a place a couple of shops up from readings a few weeks ago and regretted not going to mario’s.
/tired
marios is possibly the most overrated cafe in hawthorn. I like it, love the people, and go there a lot. but alley tunes around the corner has far superior coffee. rate liar liar, and isa brown (but more for convenience).
north melbourne has a couple of awesome cafes, bella donna? in leveson st, the old auction houses in errol st is sort of new (opened last year), and the young guy who owns it roasts his own coffee beans and will happily make you any type of coffee from the selection of beans he’s got.
for those that know it, the guy that owns the auction house apparently took a lot of inspiration from ritual roasters in SF (us of a). best coffee i had in my last stay there and i drank some really good coffee. but it does come with a certain ‘attitude’… (ritual that is).
the owner of auction house is really friendly and the coffee was pretty decent. i liked the feel of the place a lot.
i liked liason (ridgeway pl, city) a bunch… the owner is awesome and i enjoyed the coffee a lot. i know others werent as impressed though.
brother bubba budan is the best coffee ive had here… atomica was good, but didnt blow me away.
maybe you should expand your horizons?? there is a guy that works there, sean, who’s got a couple of different bikes (some fixed, some not) and makes good coffee.
I went there last week. The barista poured four or five esspresos before he got one good enough to sell me. I drank it and it was sour which I thought was strange because the guy is absolutely obsessed.
