Best place to lock your bike in Melbourne CBD?

An obvious question but one that has evaded me for many years.
Any safe-ish hidden (or perhaps not hidden more likely) places to lock up your valuable NJSMobil in the Melbourne CBD?

Thank you

Preferably a location that will not result in bogan-stomping, theft or courier backing-into.

Overnight?

Good question- no not overnight, just for evenings and lateish nights. I imagine finding an overnight spot would be very difficult.

It’s got me beat, anywhere near RMIT is a no go. Even heard of bikes stolen from Flinders lane out front of the police station. Only advice is to use 5 u locks and alot of chain.

Find a good monitored multilevel car park and chain that fcker good

It’s less likely to garner attention.

That being said it may give time to someone who notices it to come back and take time to steal it…

Bike Pod: Bike pod at City Square

I always try to lock up in well lit popular areas (where noone pissed is going to mess around with it). When I am out in Chinatown I have locked mine up outside the building opposite section 8. The bouncers are standing opposite and seem like enough of a distraction, and there are barred windows which you can lock it to - no problems as of yet.
I know one person who has had their bike stolen from a carpark, cameras didn’t cover the area and the carpark was not responsible due to its terms of entry.

That bike pod looks alright - anyone use it yet?

Never heard of bike pod before. Question is- what time does it close/are there conditions/signing up thing?

Sime’s house.

If you just went ahead and bought yourself a razor scooter H you wouldn’t have this problem.

Pretty disappointed with the lack of replies so far… :frowning:

To be honest it’s not something that worries me a great deal in Melbourne. I just make sure it’s someewhere that’s well lit, fairly visible (ie not down a laneway, around a secluded corner etc) and that’s about it. Also if I’m with friends on bikes, I try to make sure we lock them at the same place, seem to look more secure if there’s a few locked up together rather than just mine on its own with only one wheel secured with a mini krypto. But yeah either way, I don’t have a problem with locking my bike up around the city at night. I guess another thing is I am never really down the king st/west end of the city at night where it seems there’s more dickheads causing trouble, if I was down around there I’d probably think twice about where I was locking up

Edit: Just remembered the carpark that runs between bourke and lt col near elizabeth st is a good place to lock up (the one just up lt col from pony). There’s a little road that runs off bourke through the carpark to lt col. It is well lit, has plenty of poles/fence space and is normally pretty busy with security guards/people getting their cars I’ve left mine there overnight with no problems at all.

I run with the theory that if I use a good lock attached via the frame to something immovable and my bike gets nicked, then so be it. I once had a bike nicked using a crappy cable – lesson learnt.

Maybe my bike isn’t as desirable as an NJS showcase, but if the fear of getting your bike pinched stops you riding, then get something you don’t mind losing.

If you don’t want your bike stolen, don’t leave it alone.

Just use the share bikes.

I don’t think you’re going to get an answer Horatio. There isn’t a place in the CBD that’s risk free. I think the only real solution is to use a bike that you can live with being stolen.

find a mate with after hours access to their city office. get access card/key. drop bike off. party like it was 1999. retreive bike from office. ride home.

I work in an office in the city with after hours access- but I want to lock it up somewhere more convenient…

Okay just forget it…

there is nowhere safe to lock your bike, if it was safe you wouldnt have to lock it

get the bus or a cab if you want to go somewhere you cant keep your bike within arms length imo, there is nothing worse than having your bike stolen

At home ! (…extra characters)

the front of curtin house. or outside the 7/11 next to lt.bourke and swanston corner. curtin house is ok all night. well lit and security on the door till about 5.
i always lock there. people dont seem as likely to kick in wheels around that building either.
