Cleats vs. Cages

Hey,

I’m finding that my cages tend to crush my toes which makes longer rides a bit tough(er than usual). A friend suggested stretching the cage out and tightening the straps so that your toes don’t really come into contact with the steel, but eventually I had the same problem. I’ve got large MKS cages which I’m pretty sure are the right size (my feet are about size 9) but am considering switching to cleats. Any thoughts? Or has anyone had similar problems?

Thanks.

Well you could use steelcap workboots… :-o

IMO: if you are doing long enough rides then clipless are great. As I am sure you have already considered the catch, being you are forced to wear the bike shoes at our destination. Believe at my last place where I worked, there were several times I could not be stuffed carrying a second pair of shoes in. so I wore my Taho’s all day not a prob. just odd looks (but thats normal for me)

If your toes don’t come in contact with the cage, how are they getting crushed? Perhaps your straps are too tight and your toes are going numb?

Have you tried bending the cage a little? Otherwise, it could be that in the process of putting your foot in, you’re shoving your foot down the end of your shoe. Try putting your foot in, tightening the straps, then pulling your foot back in the shoe. It worked for my one foot that was doing it.

I have a similar problem. I think it’s my toes pressing up against the end of my shoes because my cages are too small (and my pedals are too narrow).
I would have thought Large cages would be fine for size out.
They’re definitely too small for size 13 though.

Yeah, I wear size 9 and I use Large MKS clips.

on the same but different topic, does anybody know if large Cristoph clips and larger than large MKS clips?

i use large Cristophs and they feel too big and im a size 12 foot.

No idea, I’m a 12 as well and I run medium Christophe’s, they’re pretty good, slightly smaller than what I’m used to tho.

your toes will grow calluses on the tips and then the pain shall magically disappear.

what shoes are you using?
is it possible the shoes you’re using are too soft? and you’re cutting off circulation by doing up the strap too tight?

flat pedals, plastic MTB clips, leather twin straps is the go.

Ran Cleats for about a year on my fixie, SPDs then Times as a courier and they were sweet but you cant go past plastic clips and twin straps for comfort, strength and price.
