Cousin Balki's Melbourne Rant Thread.

i actually kinda thought that provided you gave way to everyone crossing, if there was a gap where you could roll through, no worries. but now i think about it, that doesn’t make much sense coz very subjective.

sweet they weren’t dicks about it though.

Excellent use of police resources.

zebra crossing has diff rules to green man, but yeah…

There were plain clothes ticket inspectors on the tram this morning. They’d just checked everyone and all was good, then a guy got on at the front and didn’t tap. They were quietly highlighting this to each other, getting ready to pounce, so I walked up to him and told him there were inspectors on board and he should tap his card, which he did, although I don’t think he understood what I was saying (headphones). The inspectors were flustered. One said “thank you for making our job a lot easier”.

Your karma bucket just got a little bit fuller Pete.

The day i’d been hoping wouldn’t come, came today…

“Can all cyclists get off their bikes and walk across the crossing” as heard at grattan and royal pde.

what a clusterfark… the usual warriors were barreling into the intersection down the footpath trying not to lose hardwon positions in the commuter cup, peds were crossing from the hospital and walking along the path going north/south, construction workers were getting feisty about being ignored, and with the umpteenth change in traffic conditions in a couple of weeks no-one really knew where they were going or what to look out for (or not look out for).

IMO theres no easy solution for what going on there, but keeping it reasonably constant means that there is way less chance of incidents.

^ I’ve been jumping in to the central lane of Royal Pde to avoid the carnage. Did forget this morning, though.

Can somebody explain the green man rule being referred to? If there’s a green man for the pedestrians, then it’s a red light for anybody else, and therefore you can’t roll through, right?

Maybe it’s when turning left? Often peds get the green signal to go straight at the same time as cars can turn left

What was explained to me by the officer was that when you are passing through a green man pedestrian crossing you have to wait until all pedestrians have cleared the crossing (not just for a gap in pedestrians to go through).

Thanks for the heads up.

It’s a little hard to wait for them to all stop crossing, especially in the CBD. I will sneak though when there’s a gap, only ever at walking pace… But will keep this in mind from now on.

I think you’re being too kind Nikcee.

I believe there is an effective way to manage it and that there is sufficient resources to do so.

  1. All Traffic merge into the right lane. The right lane for the duration of the construction site to be limited to 30 kmph
  2. Bicycles can proceed to the footpath diversion, which could be permanently walking only (dismount pls)
  3. No disruption to pedestrians or PT
  4. Use the dozens of traffic control and observation construction workers to facilitate. They’re already onsite and holding signs and observing - empower them to direct and guide the traffic appropriately.

This could allow those wishing to cycle without dismounting to do so, slow the flow of traffic to allow for effective mixing, keep the most vulnerable users (pedestrians and PT user embarking/disembarking) safe and remove the ambiguity for the environment.

just ride through zfg

I actually meant to look up the road rules and double check details (e.g. do you have to wait for the whole crossing or just your lane/direction? When the little man goes flashing red can you go through in a gap?) but couldn’t navigate my way to the relevant rules.

I agree it’s impractical to wait at most crossings, especially when Melbourne pedestrians tend to ignore the flashing red man and keep entering the crossing until the solid red man.

ftfy.

i don’t miss this part about commuting int the city at all

Ok, so the green man thing is specifically about turning left or right. That makes sense. I think the cop was being silly even stopping you.

most of the construction workers are bigger than melbourne storm players

between this response and your comments on Andy’s FB post I’m going to have to get you to stay off the internet for a while… you are being far too rational and sensible.

havent actually taken the centre lane yet as the diversion has been good… and fark dealing with the sketchy merging of royal pde drivers in the midst of changed traffic conditions, plus i kinda want o set a good example and not lead some rookie commuter warrior into a bad situation. now might be a good time to get amongst it…

Luke - they actually had full dismount only action this morning… but no longer a need to cross with the peds.

Cyclists on Hoddle St/Punt Rd in peak hour. WTF are you trying to achieve?
