DIY front racks... show me what you've built!

Hey guys,

This is a callout to all the DIYers in the ranks. I’ve been looking at getting a good front rack for a while now and I’m fixated on the CETMA front racks. My heart says yes but my bank account says no. So I’m going to have crack at building my own and would love to see what others have come up with. All I need to carry is a messenger bag with a laptop and books and maybe a small amount of groceries now and then.

Thanks in advance!!!

Mods: delete or move if need be.

Don’t get a Cetma, Lane is the most unreliable person to get in contact with.

Worth reading through this thread too http://www.fixed.org.au/forums/f42/foofy-porteur-bike-thread-28709/

Not mine, but this looks like some mounting rail of sorts and a bunch of bolts Bunnings/ Erector Set style. $25 including a cheap hack saw?

This is phase 2

Grab a wald 137 - can be had for around 50 on ebay. Should suit your shopping needs and is cheaper than a rack (on that note, there are two types of 137 - make sure you get the type with adjustable legs so you can mount it lower).

Every homemade rack i’ve seen looks pretty nasty.

Mikdee’s got a great rack.

This was my DIY attempt using a rear rack and ‘fabricating’ some needed brackets. Budget motivated clearly =D

Makes me think of Meatloaf in Fight Club.

If you cut and drill the struts you can mount it lower. Annoying if you want to put it on another bike though. Here’s mine with cut struts.

Yep, this is exactly the look and rack I’m after. Think I’ll just have to suck it up and fork out for one… but then again the wine box rck does look sturdy.

TC: want a wald 137 or 139 for shopingbiek. anybody in sydney have one they want to sell to me cheapish?

This is a Wald 137 (I think). Pretty cheap on eBay or Amazon. I got this in the US for ~$20.

Edit: found another pic of my bike when I first built it back up on some blog.

I have a wald 198 you can have for cheap? It’s deeper (more groceries?)

Perfick!

Shucks, thanks Nick.

Yeah my pub portuer rack was a rear rack adapted as a front with a glasses tray cable tied to it. Cost 10 bucks all up.

Just get yourself an old school chair like this dude

This is my DIY jobbie. A mate of my dads put it together in an afternoon after I showed him the cetma. Not the prettiest but it works well

That looks awesome Spider! The screen door metal grille is a nice touch.

Yeah came up a treat! Darn strong too. Had 2 ppl sitting on it before

Few spare minutes at uni and came up with this. Took inspiration from Cetma and Spiders rack.
Going to build it out of some 1/2" square tubing and should end up being 11" x 11" on the platform. 12" on the uprights and should hopefully sit pretty close to the front wheel.
