man, DVD libraries are awesome. i agree with nexus, nothing like wandering around the library and finding something you’ve never heard of or an old one you meant to check out 15 years ago.
my LDVDS in South Yarra is great, good collection of ~classics~, new releases, arthouse, and tv series.
sadly it’s had a ‘for rent’ sign out front for a while, but in the current retail environment it should be around for a few years more…
The Video Ezy in Smith Street was like that in the 90’s. They had a Staff Picks folder on the counter, the staff were great, loved films and would point out other stuff according to your tastes.
The Northcote Blockbuster was good too! EDIT: Actually, I think it was Video Ezy in High St.
I remember when what is now Velo Cycles was a VideoEzy. My big sis took me to rent Jurassic Park in maybe 94/95? There was a big dinosaur grafitti on the side of the building and then she made me a ham sandwich.
Netflix is okay, but you end up browsing longer than the movie you choose goes for. I’m with Nexus too, a great video store with video buffs/nerds working there is the best for new movies, all the review sites can go suck a phat one.
Downloading has certainly taken some of the magic out of a movie for me these days.
It’s true that we have 827 movies on the house HD and we end up spending at least half an hour arguing over what to watch. Back in the day you would just make the pop corn and re-watch Titanic.
