I had the chance to talk with Eric Hendren (ex-framebuilder and owner of Hoffy Cycles at Sandgate) along with Darrell McCulloch, who worked at Hoffy during the 70s. A good chat about the trends in bike manufacturing and retail, roller racing, Brisbane cycling history and lots more.
Belated thanks JLN, I just found this thread today.
My old Dad had a Hoffy track frame custom built back in early Eighties by Eric.
Its a track frame, tho he bought it for riding on the road (The original fixie trendsetter!)
I love talking to Dad about his old riding days. Him and his friends would ride from Bris to Surfers on their fixed gears,
have a swim at the beach, then ride back again.
I raced that Hoffy when I was twelve and nearly won, just beaten by the town policeman.
It’s a beautiful machine, still hanging in his garage, unridden for many years, due to Dad’s advanced years.
He rode it well into his seventies though.
I don’t want to take it off him as I think it has too much sentimental value to him, but one day…
Is he doing all this on his own? I reckon its awesome, loved the interview with Joe Cosgrove. Would be awesome if someone adopted this concept in the other states, putting a face to the the big names in aussie framebuilding is great
Yeh Gavin does it by himself. One interview leads him to the next. He just put an application through to Arts QLD to try and get funding for the next biking brisbane exhibition on a bigger scale.
