As long as you are on top of the gear it’s fine up steady grades but nothing much above 7% for too long. Once spinning properly it’s easier than my roadie on the flats or hills.
Kind of like artificial willpower to keep the speed up.
Running 90-odd gear inches is stupidity for the street. Sure you can ride it like that, but your cycling technique will suffer for it. Oh and everyone who sees you grunting from the lights will think you’re an idiot!
Seriously, that gear ratio is run as a HIGH gear for many on the velodrome going 40-55km/h.
That is huge. I don’t even run a gear that big on the track. Are you sticking it to 60km/h++ pace lines down beach road? 48*16 is enough for sitting on ~40km/h on beach road pulling turns. The Melbourne that I ride in and around has quite a few hills. YMMV
Yeah, I only ran 49x14 (~94") for three rides. The bike I was riding had only ever been ridden on the track and I hadn’t sourced another chainring. Adelaide is relatively flat compared to Melbourne and I found it pretty horrible trying to take off at lights and ride in traffic. And easily stop, especially going down hills.
I’ve since bought a 42t chainring so next week I’ll be on a more comfortable 42x14.
