Bio Mechanics on Wright Street. My g/f’s bottom bracket seized one day riding into work. We dropped it off there at 9, it was ready (with a new BB installed) to be picked up at 2. Friendly people, know their shit. Stock Surly stuff too and sponsor Alley Cats.
North Adelaide Cycles (Melbourne street): Run by an ex-courier. Super nice guy and very helpful.
I was going to list bad shops, but I felt that kinda shitty doing that, so instead I suggest you frequent these two shops for help and service.
I’ve managed to get parts and occasionally good service at other stores, but those two don’t laugh at you when you wheel a brakeless track bike with risers through into their store.
Super Idiot’s i by far the worst shop ever. And if you get the gruff little guy who looks like a leprecourn watch out… he will just about kick you out of the shop for mentioning the word fixie.
+1 for Kym at North Adelaide Cycles (91 Melbourne St). For my vintage fixed project he gets my business. Don’t bother Googling, or even searching the phone book. Go into the shop.
Super Elliotts: if you want practical advice on road bikes/racing ask Gilly, everybody else does. I might try using ‘fixie’ to see his reaction.
I’m heading to Adelaide in 10 days, no bike, staying in centre of the city. Any bike shops worth looking in close by? Or some other non bike stuff worth having a peek at?
I was at North Adelaide Cycles the other day and there was a bloke there who was renting a decent roadie out. Go and see Kym and see if he will rent you a fixie. The shop is worth a look for the organised kaos in a 10m by 3m shop.
i went into the shop bikes because the other day on south road the guy there was really helpful, knows his stuff and also rides!!! seems like good place
*Little black bike: Matt is a champ, with many years of sales/ mechanics under his belt(Road, MTD BMX), best mechanic ever.
True he doesn’t have much big wheel stock/ parts etc. But I had bombproof wheels built there, had to buy spoke spokes elsewhere. Very cheap build for sweet wheelset
*Bio Mech: super friendly, quick at ordering things you need that aren’t in stock.
Very good mechanics, not cheap on mechs but at least you know the job is done to perfection. Great after sales service, i.e a text too follow up on there work.
Mad Brooks products for us vintage nuts too and have left of field bikes which reflects there personal interests.
There others are a bit hit and miss, sometimes depends on who serves you.
I’m all for internet bargains and think shit service from shops has turned people to the internet for gear, but I love looking at bikes and products and would pay extra to support of rad shop, especially one that looks after you with sweet tinkering.
Support your independent locals.
I do agree with this. The service at Bio-Mechanics makes you feel like you have a new best friend and the quality in their work is really good. I also really like how they contact you to see how your bike is after they’ve worked on it. The newsletters on their webiste isn’t too shabby either, some good tips on maintainence.
North Adelaide have the long track grips (eg Soyo’s), Bio-Mechanics have Oury’s in ever colour you want as long as it’s black, Bicycle Express have other Oury colours and Super Elliotts probabaly have something too but they’re fucked in there.
