Swapped the axel out for a solid. Had a few hairy moments stripping cheap hubs like quando and old formula (newer stuff seems better quality) so I built up a wheel with a disc hub for my beater. Works well, though my friends 15 tooth makes a heap of noise as it hits the chain, mines 16 and is fine. Chainline is good, you can always move spacers side to side. You probably know the bike with the 15 tooth, orange frankinbike conversion. the guy works with Handsome, Lee!

Sorry man, I have never loolked at your hub. When are you guys going to come out again? I would be keen to have a look at it as I have to replace the hub on the Mrs’s bike
Not so much a bike shop as such…
but if you’re after a blast/powder coat I went to a place called Central Powder Coaters on kent rd in keswick today. $50 for a blast and coat. pretty good value considering msot other places i was ringing were 100+. I’ll find out about the quality next week…
thanks stovepipe, i was looking for a good place near buy. does the blast mean i don’t have to strip the paint off myself?
Awesome. Hopefully I’ll have a front porteur rack that needs some powdercoating done soon.
bought my bike from international cycles, and i’ve bought a few parts from kym. all good service.
interested to get your feedback on these guys, as that’s a good price if the works good.
well i think they do a fair bit of bike stuff cos in the ad in the yellow pages it says cycling parts in the list of shit they do. its pretty small. its basically a house with a giant shed out back, but there were a few frames in when i went there, seem to know what theyr doing
A mate had his frame and fork media blasted and clear powder coated at Steve Wicks and Sons (Main North Road near the velodrome). They did a really nice job, with no orange peel visible, for $45. Don’t recall what the turnaround time was like.
i get all my powdercoating done at Delway Brass in Edwardstown
not sure what the pricing is like as i get ‘family’ prices but they do probably the best job of powdercoating/chroming/polishing that you will find in adelaide
they are highly recommended by people doing concours level car restorations, and they are picky bastards
i had my frame coated there last summer. cost 35 just for the powdercoat, he told me it would be cheaper to get the blast somewhere else, which i got for 25. pretty happy with them, nice guy, 3 day turnaround. but they did fuck up one spot on my mates downtube, but he was very apologetic and obviously redid it free of charge in a day
You must have missed him helping out as mechanic this year for SA’s team at the Track Nationals…!
So here’s my review for Central Powder Coaters:
shithouse.
Retarded at most of the lugs, took 3 weeks when they said 3 days, nor did they even ring me when it was finally ready - had to pester them, bubbles in paint, looks fairly thin, had bleed through from the old paint on it despite it supposedly being blasted - yellow bleeding through white powder coat at lugs looks stupid, some little spots that are flat out not covered around the lugs which are now little rust spots.
i will be going to steve wickes & sons for my future business
stovey, send me a pm and i can refer you to someone who will get it 100% right the first time
?
yep
Edwardstown Powdercoating will do a sandblast and powdercoat a frame in a generic colour for 50 bucks. You can’t beat that!
P.s. Super Elliots Rules!
Edwardstown Powdercoating does a shit job. I had an old roadie done there a couple years ago and it flaked within a week, then big chips (no pun intended) started coming off within two. As far as I could tell, they did no undercoat.
$50 might be cheap, but the worksmanship was terrible. Dont go there.
Also - super eliiots rules if you like being served with a shitty attitude and being ripped off.
NAC and BioMech 4 eva.
If any frame has nice/ fancy lugs like Nervex or similar I’d be opting for paint over powder coating.
Lugs don’t loose definition with paint, which seems can happen with powder coating from what I’ve seen.
I use automotive 2-pak on my frames and I think it is the best option. 2-pak clear coat over the top of paint and graphics and Robert’s your mother’s brother.
