Gravel/touring road questions and link ups

Print off your own …

I think it might be possible to extract route gps files somehow, but I am not really familiar with how that site works.

EDIT: Can download cue sheet files and gpx files using Export button on far right.

Ah cool. Thanks for that. I’ve printed these; reckon I can rely on them enough? I thought there might be a more official one that wasn’t generated from a GPS route. No worries though. I am going to take a GPS.

So close to my home town of Churchill.

Make sure to hit up the Yarragon Ale House, south side of the highway heading towards Trafalgar. Great selection of beers, even if the place is a big tin shed. Add in the Mirboo North Brewery and there’s two good reasons to do the Gippy Gold ride

Saturday’s looking wet wet. Dunno about Gippy Golding it. Hmmm…

Doing the shorter version, staying in Mirboo North.

And abandoned. For a number of reasons.

Edit: bugger…

I’m very much a noob when it comes to finding routes to ride. Does anyone know some nice roads to ride out from Woodend?

I don’t know the area very well, but I would be surprised if there wasn’t some good riding to be had around there with the macedon ranges and hanging rock being nearby. There should be back farm roads to link it all up also.

Look at these for a start …

If you want better advice, you probably should give more information about what sort of ride you want to do - i.e. what terrain, how much climbing, which type of bike, how far.

Also why Woodend? Have you tried asking at the local bike shop or contacting local riding groups to give you a start? Also if you have a car driving around the area with a map is often the best way to see which roads are the best for the type of ride you want to do.

Ah cheers. TWBD - that’s what I was after, I vaguely remembered seeing mentions of rides out that way that mustve been what I was thinking of.
Nah have done no investigating yet. Internet was my first point of call (see: lazy option). No real reason for woodend. It just seems like a nice area, breweries around, easy to get to, potentially good for a ~75km scenic ride. Figured someone on here may be familiar with the area.
Your slider ride looks ace though, if I ever muster the will power to get out that far.

Hey folks,
Just thought I’d give you some long advance notice I’m planning some more rides in Strathbogie Ranges in Spring (Sept/October). I’ve been driving around looking for new routes … should come together pretty well. I’ve even found a commercial micro brewery that we rode passed last time without knowing it was there (may have some licence issues getting somewhere to sample product tho).

This time I am planning a 2 day weekend with all the rides looping out of Euroa - so no train or return link issues. Still free to ride and self-supported, so riders can choose to come and do whatever ride they want on the day(s) that suit them. Planning to have various ride choice options - shorter/longer, more/less gravel, from epic to leisurely and stopping at various vineyard cellar doors. I hope to have all the route options intersecting at the meal stops - so riders on different routes can meet up, or even change their plans depending on how they are feeling. This should make it easier for partners, friends with different ride desires to participate in the same ride trip experience.

Anyway just thought I’d let you know. Will get back in a few months when there are more specific dates.

The weather looks like its clearing nicely from Thursday for a good few days running. I’m thinking of heading out for a few days starting in the Yarra valley somewhere and heading north. Any tips on a good 3 days riding on the dirt?

My first thought was for day 1: up Dirty Donna, down along Acheron to Marysville, then up to the Cathedral range to camp. Thoughts then on what I should do for days 2 and 3 and where I should camp on the second night?

But I’m not fixed on that route. Any ideas would be welcome. I’m on fairly fat tyres so not too worried if I get fairly high and into snowy areas.

Edit: having a look at google earth, it might be good to make my way east from the Cathedral Range into the Black Range towards Murrindini Scenic Reserve to camp for night 2, then head back down to Healesville and out for day 3. Anyone been through there?

One of my favs is follow scooters century to toolangi then go up mnt snt Leonard. Dirt to narbethong or Buxton. Then up to keppels hut or into cathedral ranges.

If at keppels go north along royston Rubicon rd (descent is incredible) or if in cathedrals north or south.

Black range/murrindindi is nice riding.

Or do LEiSL ? (Lake eildon super loop)

Or follow the jam for jamiseon route but start at Moe. That’s a banger.

Thanks Mike. LEiSL looks pretty great. I had been thinking about doing something similar for a while. How do you reckon I’d go with shorter mid-winter days? I’d ride from Lilydale train station to make day 1 a bit shorter. And what did you guys do for maps on the ride?

Also, I’ll be riding solo. How sketchy are the descents through there?

And where did you camp at Howqua? At a caravan park?

Hmmm. Well we started in the city and camped near Marysville first night then after a late start stayed north of Jamieson, skipped howqua, then rail trail to tallarook

Descents are fine.

Big river road us great.

Big River Rd was great.

I could only get 2 days out so I drove to Marysville to start. Day 1 I rode up Lake Mountain to Cambarville, dropped into the Big River valley and rode out to camp just at the Jamieson-Eildon Rd junction. Happy to do it in mid-winter - was pretty cold but conditions were otherwise perfect and there wasn’t a single other soul in the valley. Day 2 I rode out to Eildon for lunch, then back down to Marysville on the Maroondah. Jamieson-Eildon Rd is itself extremely nice - especially the long descent down into Eildon.

I was thinking of jumping back down into Rubicon Rd after Thornton and skirting inside the Cathedral Range to Marysville, but was facing a headwind, a bit of rain sitting over the hills and pretty tired legs. Probably a good decision as I didn’t roll into Marysville until after 4pm anyway.

Also, got myself a copy of the Rooftop’s “Toolangi - Black Range Forest Activities Map”: The Map Market - A.B.C. Maps. Is good.

Sweet.

Yeah, nice one diddy!
