So I’m about to go full beardo, well almost I’m building a gravel road, around town, rando.
I’m looking at running Athena 11 50/34-12-29.
This should handle what I need as it’s not going to be a loaded tourer.
Question is i would like a nice looking set of brakes like Paul’s that work well, what’s the thoughts?
Caliper: buy the r650s that Jear is selling
Canti posts: 80-85mm mini vees, Tektro cr710 if tyres and guards won’t fit under minis
It has canti studs, looking at 32-35 resist nomad or gran bois, with fenders.
It’s on the Paconi frame
Stud placement matters, but 85mm arms should get you there. I have some trps… (You can bring the frame over and we can mock up tyre/guard/brake
That would be great, prefer to build it once.
Trp over Paul purely on budget or performance too? Only asking as I love the look of the Paul’s.
Also I love mini v on the front but really love tight brakes with solid feel and am yet to ride a mini rear I like the feel of, that being said I don’t thinki I have ridden many well set up with compression less housing.
Do a mike d. Mini front, lo pro canti rear.
If you have a MUSA CNC obsession, get Paul mini motos, but Tektro rx5s are just as good for a looooot less money
If you wanna try my bike, its got campy 11spd levers with a trp 8.4 front, compressionless and (well when I put it back on) a low profile rear canti -tektro cr710.
54cm.
Cheers I might check it out,
My concern is the boss width, front is 61 rear is 83 will that narrow front be an issue with modern set ups?
75-80 is ideal, so you’ll have to run the thinnest of pads on the front, rear is fine.
Worst case, you have to find a classic canti to run on those narrow posts.
Oh, and maybe don’t go wide rims.
Oh man beardo Lyf is tough
primpin’ ain’t easy
Also have 8.4’s FR with campy 11spd shakes. Compressionless housing. Stop on a dime, not too grabby either.
When did brifters become shakes?
Maybe I’m just grumpy because beardo is itchy, but sexy (see link) and post a clean shaven Christmas I may be a few days over the
brifters is a dumb portmanteau, shakes isn’t.
Ell-P invented it AFAIK.
Pretty sure Sheldon Brown was an early endorser of the brifters name, beardo enough for me.
So other options re braze bosses wider(may not have room), get a low trail wide boss fork(I think surly just released one)
Or sell it and just get a cross bike haha
Whats the surly fork? also, can go threadless that way.
Can’t swap the spacers on the pads to the outside of the brake arms?
You mean the soma Champs Elysees fork. User Zach has one.
But it’s 1 1/8".
Even with the thin washers on the inside that’s not enough, I run that setup with 85mm posts and 23mm rims and it’s barely wide enough.
Don’t sweat the pad spacing, build it up and if the braking is an issue, look into a classic canti, they work really well when setup right.
I went in to commuter to grab some drop out screws and a headset yesterday and they mentioned that soma or surely were releasing a low trail 1" fork.
Looking at the fork the studs are brazed right in it could easily be re brazed back to 75 might look into that and do it right
I’d build before braze. Avoid the extra heat cycling if you can.
Soma might have a 1" batch on the way, dunno.
