L'Eroica bike?

I’ve had this bike for over four years now, only just brought it back from the US this time round. It was kind of pristine pre-storage and trip, but now has a scratch on downtube and is more a rider than a hanga. I got it a NOS seatpost, selle anatomica saddle, some nice vintage wheels and cerfs, recabled and here it is,ready to ride. It’s all nuovo record, french bb and headset, british hubs (on both these and the original HF tubs that it orinigally had). Anyway, its good to have it around. I have a VO BB that i might put in it at some stage, and also the original cinelli unicanitor saddle… might put that and some old peds on when things get serious.

I’m thinking about taking it to the L’Eroica granfondo and having a crack there… is anyone else considering going? If so, show us what youre thinking of bringing!

The Australian or Italian one?

Aussie, beechworth. Coming up soon, I think.

Theres also the Noosa one,
I will do the Noosa one as theres no age limit.
I would love to build a nice pre 86 for the italian one but thats a big build i dont need at the moment.

this one

I cant do this one either,
It is also pre 87, All my bikes are 91.

i’m sure someone would be keen to lend you one for the ride man!

curious to find this on the Beechworth L’Eroica site:

“Giant Cyclo Cross by Dirty Deeds is coming to Beechworth. Australia’s premier event for mud and sweat is proud to be part of the Gran Fondo Beechworth. The circuit is right in the heart of town and with the Bridge Road Brewery’s spectator stadium will bring a little Belgium to Beechworth.”

and apparently:

“L’eroica is a period cyclosportive rally for riders and collectors of classic racing bicycles built before circa 1980”

dang, I got a ~1983ish frame.

$135 to ride my old bike…

I’d say 1983 is ‘around’ 1980. Black leather shoes, white socks, crochet gloves and a wooly jersey, who would know?

we sold our souls for the benefit of DDCX2013. however the course is pretty good, and passes right by the beer tent with low barriers right out the front for maximum bunnyhopping hilarity.

Yep, and I am a bit worried about the sorts that will be there. $135 is a lot to pay to ride for two hours, then stand in the corner and hate everyone else there and the fancy food theyre talking about. Unless you are there too, then we can hate em all together and have a grand time.

Great looking ride. I saw a lot of these as well as sweet Motobecane’s whilst living in Nyc.

I might suggest to do a little measuring with regard the VO BB. The record (if I can see correctly) cranks use a driveside offset (asymmetrical) BB for correct chainline/clearance. In my experience I’ve used a 1.5 or 2mm shim under the fixed cup with symmetrical cartridge BB’s but it won’t work with french/italian right threaded fixed cup’s as they unwind quite easily. By all means give it a shot as you have time before the event but if the current loose cup/ball BB is all good and original I’d prolly leave it as is.

Phil BB’s are ideal as you can adjust/wiggle room it but they can be a little more expensive.

btw, I might have some campy brake small parts for you (re: wanted forum)

I wasn’t dissin’, I’m actually keen to do it.

Plus its the cheapest event by about $90!

“Excuse me sir, can I see the serial number on your bike?”

“Uh… it’s uh…” jumps on 1983 bike, rides away

Maybe too much thinking about this. I rode the 2011 Noosa event on my Salsa Casseroll. Down tube shifters and steel frame, but no age. No one seemed to care. Sure it’s good to ride a period bike and there were plenty of beautiful ones, but it’s just a ride.

It has the potential to be one of the most fun ones we’ve done. It’ll be one of Nik’s most expansive courses in any case. We’ll be taking advantage of natural and made barriers, rocks, stairs, Freds.

On their website it has one Date of pre 83 one other section under the ride details I think it mentions pre 85 so you should be right.

The noosa one is pretty relaxed, as long as its steel or lugged alloy your fine.

Even the Italian one can be done on modern bikes as long as its Built in the era pre 86 and has non aero brake lines.
If I remember correctly.

And in the event collection page it says “Vintage cyclist’s pedal-salute to yesteryear! L’eroica creates the cycling of -yesteryear as participants ride a pre-1987 bike and enjoy a pedal-to produce Sunday festivity! L’eroica means ‘the heroes’ and the giants of cycling’s history return to the road this weekend.”

Next thing you know it’ll be pre-2000 bikes.
