Mongoose Randonneur

I was gifted a Mongoose Randonneur frame and fork recently and have begun to design the build list. I’m trying to keep this cheap by using parts I’ve got lying around, and want to get it up and running before our gravel grind in March.

Here is the frame (not mine):

I’ve got a spare 10sp campy daytona groupset where one of the brifters doesn’t work (brakes fine, gear change broken) so I was thinking of designing the bike to be a 1x10 setup. I can run the 39T ring on the front, run the front derailleur as a chain guide with a cable to the dead brifter to keep it tensioned, and 11-25T cluster on the rear. Wheels are some old Khamsins I’ve had lying around. I’m going to throw a cheap BB and headset into it, all I need help with is the brakes.

It’s got canti studs, so I’m wondering what I can run from campy brifters, and what is a good cost/performance trade-off?

Put the FD cable head in the cable stop on the DT, no need to cable all the way to the lever.

The rear spacing is 135mm I think, so watch what wheel you use on the aluminium frame. (I used 130mm and clamped the QR down…)

Brake leverage is similar to external gear cabled shimano levers, but not current gen shimano or any sram.

Get a fork crown mounted cable stop/hanger if you’re using cantis, better than a headset stack one.

Option 1: Order some tektro CR710 brakes from ebay. there’s an ebay seller in adelaide with them. Low profile, integrated barrel adjuster. Pretty nice, decent power.

Option 2: I have a pair of black FSA SL-K cantis, wide profile, cartridge pads, integrated barrel adjuster. Nice, light.
Option 2.5 I have some tektro 926AL 80mm mini vees, most rim clearance possible, powerful, least money.

Option 3: Tektro RX5 85mm mini vee brakes plus adjustable noodle. Although you’ll probably have issues at the rear as there’s no cable stop at the seat tube IIRC. Great power though. Maybe just one at the front and a canti at the rear. Mikdee is running this excellent mullet setup on his CX bike.

Option 4: go to bike shed, dig up a set of shimano altus brakes for nix.

Thanks Blakey, PM coming your way.

Enabled!

Needs an Antmandan spray job. I expect nothing less then awesome.

awesome work, you gonna ride this at cross this season?

Cool. I just helped a guy at work do some cheap mods to make it suitable for grinding/racing. Yes they are heavy.

On option 2.5/3. I used Tektro 926AL mini-v and just ran full length brake cable to the rear with zip ties along the top tube to hold it all in place. Stopping power is very good.

The tektros were $25 and were here in a few days - Tektro 926AL Mini V Brake Pull Brakes Silver FOR BMX Cyclocross Road Tandem | eBay

The wheelbase is likely to be a bit on the long side but I’ll see how it goes. And yes Gypo, it will be getting a bit of a revamp paintwise

Yea long wheel base would be hard to hack around dem turns
