Jesus H, on what planet are BG Rock n Roads considered a ‘touring tyre’?! They’d be a really average touring tyre on account of the fact that they’d be slow as shit on sealed. They’re a gravel grinding tyre, pure and simple.
I’m with Mike. These look great. Price seems reasonable on JensonUSA. I’d get a pair myself but think they might be a bit squirmy on my rims with a 19mm bead width. What do people think? Yah or nay?
If you want this size or wider why not look for a tyre labeled 29 x 1.8 (700x45) or 29 x 1.9 (700x48), seen as though 29 inch and 700c are one and the same (note they have the sameETRTO dimensions 622mm).
I’ve run 700x42’s on my 19mm rims, its ok, probs not ideal and I have no comparison (never used on 23mm+ rim) but in the early days of 29er people would run 29er tyres on road rims so whatevs.
Kenda Happy Mediums are similar to the Sammy Slick but they come in 32, 35 and 40c.
I’m no mountainbiker, but have been testing these out lately and like them a lot for say 50/50 dirt/bitumen.
! likewise, I aint no dirt wizard, but tyres get me pretty excited. FWIW, the mate I ride with 95% of the time ride kenda karma L3R pro 29 x 1.9s, and he can make me dizzy with climbing, cornering, braking, anything. I’d give them a go. Both of his came in under 500g.
Whenever I see WW mtb tyres I think sidewall failure. A friend of mine shredded a ‘performance’ Nobby Nic on a rocky trail down by the Yarra. Was on the front. Result was not pretty. Ill be sticking with my Snakeskins. Stuff the weight penalty. I like to keep my face in one piece.
so pulled the trigger on a set of the 2.2 (they normally measure narrow) Continental X King Protection (conti’s tubeless ready version now)
will be putting them on some UST Mavic X Max’s to run on the singlespeed this winter. depending on how they go i might also get my hands on a set of the 1.8 Mud Kings if Melbourne weather gets really crazy this winter.
will post thoughts in a week or two… very excited. traction… oh how i missed you
Just to clarify, if you have stans rims, tubeless ready = any non-UST tyre, with varying amounts of pain and suffering and pumping-up device? (edit- pain and suffering with XC tyres are most often equal to zero) I know manufacturers say stuff like “not recommended for tubeless” but its all hogwash, some tyres lose air more than others, but who cares? Even without stans rims, you can get it happening with a little more pain and suffering a lot of the time.
UST is mavics tubeless system with a chunky (heavy) square bead and matching rims, innit? (edit - just read a bit, theyre also heavier because they are airtight… who doesnt use sealant in UST anyway?)
Are the protection tyres you mention “tubeless ready” because theyre UST, or because they have a feature (sidewall thickness/toughness for instance) that makes them “more suitable” for tubelessification? (third edit! keep up! yeah, this system is apparently universally useable, UST and non… though I wonder if the altered bead profile would fit into stans tighter hook?)
This from DICE
“I bought a UST AKA once as a rear tyre. Mounting it was bloody ridiculous on Stans Flows” I assume that its impossible to get a UST bead to snap into a stans hook? Or am I losing the plot with tyre/rim combinations?
Maxxis LUST tyres fit like a dream on Stans rims. I found the one Geax TNT tyre I have tried so difficult to fit because it was very, very tight on the rim, but I’m sure that once it was inside the rim it’d seat easily enough - it’d certainly never burp off the rim. I decided against running it because I was worried that If I did end up getting a flat I wasn’t confident that I’d be able to get it off and back on the rim again.
JP, I did a day of shuttle runs (cheating) at Redwoods last Saturday. Took your lead and ran my pressures LOW - 26x2.25 Ardent @ 20psi front, 26x2.35 Ignitor @ 25psi rear. AWESOME!! Ok, so there was no rocky sections but I was riding fast over juddery rutted hardpack and roots. The lower pressure was so much better for grip, reducing chatter and still had no problem with flats. Sold on riding low!
the Conti tyres are very confusing - and it’s taken me a while to get the deal, but i’m 99% sure it goes like this:
Wire Bead, “Folding”, RaceSport (which is what used to be Supersonic), Protection (which is “RTR” - revolution tubeless ready. so tubeless bead and some latex lining, but NOT UST), UST.
they seem to do most/all of those models for most of their tyres.
The ones i have are tubeless ready. i’ll be trying them on CrossMax XL wheels first, cos i have them lying around, but as UST wheels i can’t see an issue.
i put an ikon 2.2" EXC on the rear last night. Required a friend with a high volume pump and a bit of know how to get it to seal… first time on these crests that I’ve needed anything but a high pressure track pump and soapy water.
Lots of out of the saddle climbing traction this morning, maybe slightly faster rolling than the X-king and about the same in corners. Front X-king still going strong, giving heaps o bite.
aired up with a high pressure/low volume pump too… no trickery about removing valve cores or anything.
have been using SPEX sealant, and it might be the age of the sealant, but i can’t seem to get them to hold air more than a couple of days… might try some other/newer sealant and see how it goes. haven’t really had a chance to try them off road too much due to illness, but after the first ride i went and got the CX version i liked them that much at the time!!!
