“paconi team rider”

wow! do you have any info on this team? i wonder who was riding for them and when… and where they raced.
One of my mates got a frame built for him for free in '99 by KW but he wasnt on a team.

My Paconi roadie was apparently custom made by Kev for one of the riders in the Jatco team that road in the Commonwealth Bank Cycle Classic in the early 90’s.

Its got Sachs New Success groupo, stamped 93, and a Reynolds 853 tube frame at 62.5cm c/c, must have been some big dude!

NOTE: watch the for sale thread shortly, its about to be listed.

See!!

Trying to post a couple of early pics of the red and yellow Paconi from when I had it built by Kevin Wigham back in 1985 as a 15 year old kid. Was still growing so decided to have it made bigger than required so I’d grow into it. Had a one inch drop put n the top tube given funny bikes were all the rage at this time… my dad wouldn’t let me get a full funny bike (… Although the next frame I had built by Kevin about 18 months later was a fully Reynolds 653 funny bike with the same paint scheme. Wish I’d hung into that one!). Ended up giving the bike to my dad who rode it until he passed away in 1998 and it hung around my garage for years making me a bit sad each time I looked at it so I sold it on… And voila, here it is! I keep getting an error saying the pics are 57kb larger than my capacity irrespective of how large the files are when I save them. Any suggestions?

That’s a great story, T. It’s always cool to learn the origins of these old frames as most of the time it goes unknown. I don’t know if Cale hangs around here anymore, but the bike is currently on ebay - just in case you feel like getting it back.

Here’s the link, Paconi on ebay

Mods: I know I’m flexing the rules a bit here, so please delete the link if I’m out of line. I just think it’s pretty cool.

Holy hell that head tube looks steep, both pretty dam cool.

Wow… thanks Dead Legs! Just sent the eBay guy a note and some pics. Suspect it’s gonna freak him out. Love his claim on TdF origins… sadly not true but never let the truth stand in way of a good story, huh? Another user here sent me a note about how to upload pics (… I need to host them online) but kind of seems pointless now, unless anyone wants to see them still? Thanks again. An unexpected trip down memory lane.

Have established Cale is not likely to see these and probs doesn’t own the bike any more… but here are some links original pics (… along with some really tragic clothing/helmets) from back when the red and yellow bike was new, along with a pic of the Paconi funny bike that followed about 18 months later in 1987. Enjoy…

^ Yes! Please post pics. I can’t believe you were getting custom frames built at 15! Do you still ride/race? How much was the frame in '85?

So rad.

Ha ha… thanks. Pics posted as best I could (… still getting the hang of this site). Yep, my old man was a roady and track cyclist from way back… just tracked down a ‘Victorian Country Championship winning’ track frame he shared with his brother back in the 60’s. He managed a pro/am bike team called ‘Team Ramon’ with riders such as Danny Clark in the crew. I grew up around the game and my first roady at age 13 was one of Terry Hammond’s old frames by all accounts. I grew pretty quickly so had a series of Paconi frames built by Kevin… pretty sure the 531 Pro cost around $450 and the 653 funny bike around $550’ish. Yep, still racing triathlons now (… with a little road racing thrown in)… 28 years down without a season off. I have four sons now so we have a fleet of 15 bikes between us including a number of cool fixies (… I’m an ex-wrench and bike courier too so always had heaps of gear around) that are the latest thing for my wife and my eldest son (… so had to build one for myself too). Am now into sourcing a bunch of gear (… frames, wheels etc) from China like so many others and doing freebie builds for buddies who, like me, are on a budget. As with many here, I have the illness! Sorry for the download… will stop there or put you to sleep

Thanks for posting. Couldn’t work out the URL. Sorry to inflict my sluggo’s!

Thanks for sharing, Td. Really interesting stuff and really awkward photos. :stuck_out_tongue:
