Ramon (the not a McBain thread)

^ i heart that frame so much

Where is this located now? I was drooling over a raw version at Joe’s years ago, but remember seeing this one pop up.

Can’t wait to get my Frezoni back.

^ Don’t know. It belongs to user Uncle Grumpy off the BNA Forums, if that helps.

Pursuit

These were built by Wayne Roberts in Adelaide.

Wayne also built under his own name “Wayne Roberts” and also “Ciombola”

Sometimes also spelt Persuit. Super Elliotts have a road frame hanging from their ceiling still.

that euro… oh my…

Nice abeni. Looks fully chromed and in good condition.

I like this thread however i think for it to work perhaps it should be in a different section of the forum. I think instead it could be interesting to start documenting all aussie frame builders (via photographs, serial numbers…etc) here for people trying to ID a frame they have bought or perhaps are looking to buy.

i have just uploaded a few photos of some aussie frames ive got lying around. In the set I have tried to show lugs and other serials as well as any pantos on each:

The frame I would like to know more about is the “Reynolds” Track frame. it has an “H” stamped on the bb but no other serial. it has some interesting lug treatment. Wrap around seat stays, a fair bit of drillium. the seat post is 26.6 - not sure if that has much indication of a tube set.

Unfortunately no ebay listing to post sorry.

^ weren’t Cecil Walker’s made by Kev Wigham too? I was under the impression that he was making these. I think he made my wife’s Blucher Koln too.

I think (Daryl) Perkins is worthy of mention here. Not did he make great track bikes, he also raced and coaches and his son Shane happens to be the fastest man on the planet ATM. But if you google search him you will only get crumbs.

And Blakey, is this your redonkulous Perkins? >

There must be more Perkins frames on the WWW surely

this thread on BNA also has a good list of Aussie builders.
BNA - Australian Cycling Forums • View topic - late 80s early 90s frame builders?

there is a few on here with a search.

Sugerkanes came to mind.

My boss has an early 00s 853 Aero Perkins as his commuter. I should post up some pics.

Also Gear Brisbane is/was selling a purple Perkins Endevour frame. Pretty cheap too I might add.

This is true; three ways to get a Kev Wigham built frame - Paconi, Blucher Koln or Cecil Walker. Mind you, I don’t think Kev built all Cecil Walker frames.

maybe on this thread, or we could start a new one, where you post a picture of your Australian frame or another frame that you have come across. And then you provide details.
-Lug Shots
-Pantos
-Serial Numbers
-Indentifying Factors
-Builder
-Predicted age

Yeah I think this is true for Blucher Kolns too. I heard that some were made by some outfit out of SA. Name escapes me - Prolite??

Also what about Frank Paino. A friend has one. Pantos everywhere. Pretty nice. I can only find one Paino online (but about a million photos of that same Paino I should add: Paino Road Bike - a set on Flickr)

Yep, justin foxs infamous paino. Theres a thread on rb and bmu re: that^^
Good read.

Man that green frame has done the rounds, and if that is Pip’s old pink Ken, it came off an really bad ebay listing but was too big for me and he ended up with it. It’s funny seeing how many hands a frame goes through…

My favourite australian builder is Ron Mitten/Michalo:

And I’ve got one more in the garage that I am yet to get pics of.

As far as I understand it, Ron Mitten built maybe 180 frames under the name Michalo, Gordon Hill told me that Ron would sometimes build for Hillman when they were super busy, and user Sekt had a Mitten built frame that was stickered up for one of the tassie shops, maybe a McBain… Ron built and lived in Coburg and started building frames for his son when he started racing. Everyone i’ve spoken to about him held his frames in high regard. I reckon I’ve only seen maybe 7 for sale, and I own thee of them.

Here’s another interesting locally made frame from the shed, its from the Melbourne Bicycle Centre. Pretty much every one of these you see is a plumbing pipe, 27" wheeled shitter. This had a complete gold Galli group set and is a very neatly put together frame.

This one?

This one’s a pearler! A vintage Michalo road bike in beautiful condition. Sized at 54cm square (c-c). Built by Ron Mitten in Tassie back in 1983, it’s barely been ridden since then. Tubing is Tange Championship #1, their top end tubeset. The componentry is a bit of a mix of Shimano, Sachs, Suntour, Dia-Compe, Tange, etc but all looks to be in great condition. Windowed lugs. Beautiful bike that needs little more than a clean up to become a prime road machine. Someone really needs to ride this thing, ’cause it doesn’t fit me and deserves better than my garage.

I actually visited Mischa in Hobart and took it for a quick spin, unfortunately it felt a bit small - which was odd seeing as it’s the same size as my Kona - otherwise I definitely would have bought it. I wonder if he still has it?
